Need some help again. My rav4 2.0 d4d is hard to start when the engine is warm. It seems to start fine when cold but if I park up and am only stopped for a few minutes it is slow to start.

Any suggestions what to look into first would be appreciated. Thank,s Martin.

Going to clean the MAF sensor this evening. Is there a way to check if the SCVs are working properly. Thanks again..

Start with a fuel filter.

Thank,s Don. Will change it. It was done recently but worth a try.

Thank to everyone for the replies so far.

I have only had the rav4 for a short time so i am learning as i go.

In general it starts fine. Engine turns over about 2 or 3 times and it is started. But a couple of times when it has been warm and only switched off for a short time it has been very hard to start.

It turns over slowly and sounds as if the Battery is going flat. Then when it starts it seems fine. It has not happened now for 3 days.

Hi Martin,i have had this problem and i would go straight for the starter.I beleive that when the starter warms up something gives up inside. The standard starter is 1.4kw but there is a 2.2kw version available. If money is no object the get a brand new in the box denso or similar.I brought a recon 1.4kw an it made no difference, after a lot of faffing i changed it for a recon 2.2kw and now i go to work on the starter sometimes. In my opinion either a new or recon will fix your problem but as i found a recon can still have the same problem as when rebuilt and tested this would be done on a bench and not subjected to hot conditions. You takes your chance, good luck Yan.

Thanks everyone for the replies. Four days ago I changed the fuel filter and cleaned the MAF sensor. So far this seems to have done the job..

Problem back again.

I thought this was sorted but had the same problem this evening.

Got home from work and stopped rav outside, Five minutes later went back to car and it would not start.

It turned over with starter but would not start up. Tried this 3 or 4 time,s but no go. Then I got a booster pack from the garage and hooked it up to the Battery. And it started first try. I realise this sounds like Battery trouble but I cant understand why this only happens when the engine is fully warmed up.

Hi Jamie. I have heard that the temperature sensors can cause this problem. There is supposed to be 2 off them one for gauge in dash and one for engine management. I have not found out which is which yet. But the one for engine management is supposed to be the problem. Hope this helps.

Hi Martin,right......will make some enquiries about that then.

As,to be honest i do like my Rav4 alot,it starts like new on cold starts now, after that new Battery & starter fitted last week, but even now it doesnt fill me with confidence to turn off a hot engine,to re fuel or shop for a few mins,....then try and re start it,its better than it was before the work......but its not how it should be,it does'nt jump into life.

The frustrating this is............its the ONLY thing wrong with it.

Good luck yourself Martin, and thank you.

Well after almost 2 weeks of the work being done, its the same as it has been for the last few years to be honest.

Starts like a new vehicle from cold start, it now reminds me of how it was before the HOT start issue cropped up.

Tbh,....from that perpective its fixed.

BUT

I complained to dealer on thurs,.....as i drove ten miles to work ,turned engine off.....gave it 5 mins, then tried re starting it......it cranked at least 10 times and easily......but wouldnt fire ! ! !.

On friday they colllected from my work, and tried varying attempts at starting it......in hot conditions, they said it started every time, after a few cranks.....as it should.

So i've got it back now again, and yes.......so far its started each time as it used to.......

Watch this space..........if i get any more issues i'm to let them know straight away.

Have to say,as usual their service is excellent.......polite, curteous, I just hope it continues to hot start with no issues.

Hi, did your fix continue to work, my car has developed the problem & won't start when hot. 2003 XT4 2L D4D, 140k. Starts fine when cold but won't start when engine up to temp. Need to leave it 10 - 15 mins to cool down before it will start.

Cheers Saul

Take a look at my post, top of page 5 on this thread. Start by cleaning the electrical contacts - free and takes about 30mins and for the benefits of others please post back how you get on - thanks!

Cars which start fine when cold - fail to start when hot but start OK when left for a while often suffer from heat soak of the starter motor. Engine heat causes the starter motor to increase in temperature - this increases the resistance of the windings - the current load increases and the car becomes difficult to start. If the motor is left to cool for a while - the car starts fine. Proprietary heat covers are available but at least one forum member solved the problem by wrapping the body of the starter motor with exhaust heat wrap.

You'll see I tried heat wrap in one of my attempts to fix the problem - it did help for a while but the problem got worse over time (the heat cover is still on so that wasn't the cause of the deterioration).

Clean the earth cable connections before you do anything and see what that does first.

Hiya

I'm also having the same issue with a 2005 RAV4 mkII D4D, so I was hoping that one of you lovely people has managed to actually solve the problem permanently.  If so, please let me know, otherwise I'm having to rely on my garage and a diesel specialist best guesses.  So far, it's been a new starter and 2 fuel injectors, but there's still the same old problem.

Thanks

Sue

Hi - I've posted on this a few times, my car had the issue and it's fixed. Before spending more money clean the earth cables, takes 30-45mins and costs nothing - see if that helps.
