Clunky from 1st to 2nd is not unusual and there doesn't seem to be a Toyota policy about it. Search the forum for gearbox issues/difficult gear changes cos there's quite a lot of info out there about this.

I have the same problem. My 2.2d has 80k on the clock and is quite clunky from 1st to 2nd. I got some new gearbox oil but didn't notice any difference. When the car is warmed up it is quite a bit better, but still nothing as silky smooth as say a Renault Megane (then again, you don't have the electrical problems of the French cars). You just have to ease it into 2nd, so no fast take aways from the lights, lol! I did read somewhere on one of these forums about some fancy motorbike oil, but my garage just put in the recommended oil.

I've just remembered, I tend to double declutch and this overcomes it completely. I actually find that it makes for a faster gear change than synchro mesh, especially on the way down the box.
