I have a MR2 roadster 1999 and the person I got it from said it 'just stopped'

Rocking the car in gear it will go half a a revolution when the key is turned then seems to lock solid. Starting again it is locked until you rock it. No oil is apparent under the car etc

Anyone have any ideas ?

Sounds like the engine has seized, probably due to oil starvation a known issue on the 1.8 vvt-i engines, check the forums for oil consumption issues affecting 1.4/1.6 & 1.8 vvt-i engines
