Rear View Camera Installation On Prius Gen 2 2004

After a year of research I managed to install a camera with output on MFD.

At the beginning, about 5 mouths ago i installed camera with output in a after-market interior mirror.

The installation was relatively easy, I didn't cut any wires and total cost was around £75

My car is a t spirit 2004 prius, but i think is possible to install camera in any Prius G2 with low resolution MFD

If you have any questions, please feel free to ask

Ambrozie Im very interested in this, but are you using the MFD to display. You mention an after market mirror, Im not clear on that part. Where is camera installed and where did you get it. Any more detail would be appreciated. Thanks

I both a mirror with a 4.3" lcd inside from eBay.

I attached some pictures with the process and the result.

The installation was easy, I finished everything in about 2 hours. I paid £18 for camera and £25 for mirror and about £3 other materials.

How do bring up the display on the MFD. I don't see an obvious choice for an external input. Is the quality ok on the mfd, that would be my preferred choice.

The resolution of MFD is low, and the image quality is fine but far from an external 720HD display. It is better in my opinion then a 4" external display. A bigger image is more useful than a small image even at a low resolution.

The RGBs interface convert the image signal from the camera to RGBs and make the switch between the navigation and the camera image.

Because the interface has other video input port, I'm thinking of installing a camera in front, may be in the toyota emblem..

I don't think it is as easy on the 2006-2009 Prius as Toyota changed the MFD to a higher resolution and AIUI they changed the video interface from RGB to something else.

I vaguely recall there being various DIY projects to get an Apple Mac displaying on the MFD, but these were always on a 2004-2005 model. There was also a CAN Bus add-on that was available in the USA that displayed on the MFD, again only for the 2004-2005 model.

For high resolution MFD is very easy, because it is a Video IN in one of the connectors in back of MFD compatible with ntsc/pal camera.

For low resolution is a little difficult because you need a converter from ntsc/pal to RGBs. Can view (not can bus) has only a RGB input witch means you need a converter for a rear view camera. Can view is discontinued now.

Only coastaletech produced an interface that include a RGBs converter inside, but it is also discontinued now.

There are a lot of other solutions available on the market for low resolution MFD's, all based on same idea i used in my installation.

Thanks, yes CAN-view was the product name I couldn't recall, I was almost there as it did connect to the car's CAN bus network.

The video input on the newer cars is possibly GVIF if the CAN-view page that I landed on was correct.
