Introduction

As requested by a few members on this forum.

This is our account on how we replaced the tailgate on my RAV4 to the version which has the spare wheel mounting option.

Please understand that we are not mechanically trained, or qualified. So, any comments are welcome, especially if we have made any mistakes, missed anything important, or just require further info.

Chapter Three – Prepare replacement tailgate

Tools required/used:

  • Trim removal tools
  • Long nose pliers
  • Stanley knife
  • Hacksaw blade
  • Socket set
  • Sharp chisels

Cost this chapter : £410

Cost to date : £1282

This is how the tailgate arrived from the seller,

Most of parts had already been removed, just leaving us to remove:

  • Wheel carrier : By undoing the four bolts, and then gently pulling it away from the tailgate to release it from the locating retainers.
  • Rear window : £10 - Local windscreen company
  • The four ‘Garnish’ panels : These are plastic and can easily be broken, especially where the retaining clips are attached. The approach we used when removing the ‘Garnish’ panels was it was better to sacrifice the retaining clip, rather than damage the panel. This took us a lot longer then expected, nearly a whole day.

The 'Garnish' panels were removed in this order :

Lower Left – held by eight retaining clips & one bolt.

Lower Right – held by five retaining clips

Upper Left – held by six retaining clips & one bolt.

I do prefer the look of the RAV with the spare wheel on the tailgate,

But, also find it reassuring to have a spare wheel when travelling on my own... :driving:

Black / silver / grey tailgates come up quite often... ( now i've said that they probably won't )

If a complete one, in your colour, so easy to just swap over... cheaper and quicker..

No need to remove the glass, remove the garnish panels, and like you say, no need for a respray..

I think I would have been waiting a long time for a red one... esp with privacy glass..
