1.6 Valvematic 6 Speed Gearbox Whine

I bought a 61 plate Auris sr 3 weeks ago and have realised it has an anoying wine in the gearbox between 40 and 50 mph i can`t hear it much after because of the road noise.I have been back to the main dealer who did put the car through a thorough road test and agreed there was a background wine.We tested another car from the forecourt and this had a louder wine which started at abour 40mph.the car had only covered 20,000 miles. My car has only covered 10,000 miles.

The workshop foreman said they had not had any other complaints and that he would submit a report to Toyota. He thought that unless there had been many other complaints nothing would be done.

This is very dissapointing as i have never had a noisy gearbox during my last 50 years of driving.

I'm sure, if there is an issue, it won't be subject to how many complaints have been raised. Toyota are very supportive to their customers.

I had the same problem on mine. Mines 6 months older than yours and i got mine May last year. After three months of me driving it, I heard this whine. They later found out that it was the release bearing on its way out. So they replaced a whole clutch kit under warranty. Hope this helps

Thanks Robert.

The Toyota dealership recognised there is a noise, toyota uk will not send an engineer to assess the problem unless there is an auris he can test back to back which dosen`t have the problem. So i need to find an Auris which dosn`t whine.i don`t think it takes a very skilled engineer to compare a whineing gearbox to a non whineing gearbox.Changing the tires for a quieter brand and turning on the radio were a couple of suggestions made by the dealership.

PM your chassis number, there is a bulletin from Toyota that may affect your car, but I need your chassis to confirm.

Alan - it would be better to just share the above and similar information via the Personal Messenger facility, rather than include it in a post.

Two ways you can access Personal Messenger:

1)click on the profile picture of the person you wish to send a message to, and their profile will be displayed. Towards the right are three boxes - select the centre box 'send me a message'. This is the easiest and quickest way. Or:

2) access Personal Messenger by clicking your user name, and select Personal Messenger from the drop down menu

Sorry for the delay, Toyota's technical site was down for updates. Ok there is a bulletin that applies to your car:

REF: CP-0030T-0413

Subject:

EC6# whining noise in all gears (non deformation)
Models:
AURIS; AVENSIS; COROLLA; VERSO
Model codes:
NDE150; NRE150; ZRE151; ZRE152; ZRT270; ZRT271;
NDE150; NRE150; ZRE151; ZGR20; ZGR21
DESCRIPTION OF PHENOMENON
Some customers may experience and report that whining noise is coming from transmission when driving in all gears.
PRODUCTION CHANGE
Differential ring gear has been changed & Select force characteristic had been changed since April 2012.
Your car was built 21st Feb 2011 before the production implementation date, so depending on model and where your gearbox was built there are a series of modifications that can be carried out to repair the whining noise.
I suggest you call your local dealer and refer them to the bulletin reference above.

There is no warranty extension in place so if your car is out of warranty then yes it would be chargeable, if you have a full dealer service history then you could ask for goodwill from Toyota and they may contribute towards the repair.

Hello Alan.

I am interested to know whether you have made any progress with Toyota regarding the noisy transmission. You may have read my post of the 31st August. The work relating to technical bulletin CP-0030T-0413 was carried out but made no difference. The car has recently been inspected by a representative of Toyota G.B. and finds the whine is within acceptable limits. I am surprised and very disappointed.

Regards.

Bruce.

Hi Bruce.

I haven`t progressed very far at the moment but i will tell you what has happened so far.

The dealership does not recognise the bulletin and told me it comes from another Toyota technical site which dealerships in the u.k do not use.

Whowever they did find a bulletin which indicated that the differential casing and the output shaft should be replaced. How a casing and a shaft replacement will cure a whine beats me.So the work was carried out as per bulletin.I drove it away and realised immediately that the whine was still present.180 miles later i stopped driving the car because of the noise coming from the gearbox.I called the AA who did a short road test and told me not to drive the car anymore and arranged for the car to be flatbedded to the dealership. The AA mans comment was it sounded like there was no oil in the gearbox.

On removing the box from the car it was discovered that the output shaft bearing had broken up so both sides were replaced as a matter of course.

The gearbox still whines between 35 and 50 and is really annoying.

I`ve been back to the Toyota garage and they tell me the gearbox specialist they have is on sick leave and i will need to speak to him when he gets back.I will also need to have the car roadtested by Toyota area engineer who will need to test it back to back with a car exactly the same as mine to make decision.

Up till now they have completely ignored the bulletin which indicates the new differential ring and the new select force charistic change which was implemented in April 2012.

Hope this hasn`t bored you to much,

Alan.

Hi to all, I know its a little bit old topic.

Since I have the same issue with my Auris 2011, 16 Valvematic.

Do You have any update, is this getting worse, or there is no further harm beside the noise...

The OP hasn't visited the Club since December 2013, so you may not receive a reply.

The 6 speed gearbox on my 2009 1.6 was always slightly whiny but didn't seem to cause any other issues and was still working fine when I sold it with 120k on the clock last year.
