Avensis T22 D4D 2.0 - What Oil?

About a month ago I bought my Avensis T22 Estate 2.0 D4D 2001. The oil level was at minimum. I decided to buy some oil, and fill it till it reaches full level. What I don't know is:

a) I don't know what oil is write now in my engine. Is it fully synthetic, or semi synthetic. Can I just buy semi synthetic oil and pour it in without any damages?

b) I have no idea what oil should I buy. Should it be 10w40? If so then what oil to buy, because I almost bought elf 10w40 for diesel engines, but it said that it is not suitable for cars that contain small hard particle filters. I don't know I have that kind of filter!

Got any tips for me? Thanks :)

10w40 semi synthetic would be ideal for your car going by castrols specification. Euro Car Parts are selling 5 litres of this stuff for £12.50! You won't have done any harm with a top up IMO
