Both the AA and the RAC are trialling a universal spare wheel. The 17 inch alloy spare uses a system of ten adaptors of different sizes to determine the best fit. Once the universal spare is fitted to a car, the driver goes to a local tyre fitting centre to get their original tyre replaced or repaired. The universal spare is then either collected from the tyre fitting centre by the patrol or couriered back to the AA/RAC.
