Starter Motor Rebuilt After 15 Years Service

Hi Guys

Just had my starter motor rebuilt when it started to play up.

The symptoms were it was slightly slow, not turning the motor over, it was making a grating sound. Sometimes the car started first turn, other times just it spins. The starter clutch was damaged. The problem may have been caused by clutch dust, as when starting on cold mornings the car started and the starter was still engaged with the engine running. That caused a lot of damage. The starter was fine during the summer but started to showing signs of sticking recently. Then the 'not engaging' fault came after trying to clean the dust. Toasted starter clutch.

I decided to take the starter to Bexley Starters and Alternators. They stripped and rebuilt the starter in a few hours and I collected a repainted, as good as new starter. The work is guaranteed for 12 months. Cost £80.

I installed the starter and it is like a different car. When I turn the key it has a more modern sound and is quicker too.

For those with the lean burn engine, the starter is not easy to remove as it is behind the engine and not in front. The bottom bolt is hard to get at and I had to use my ramps. All other Avensis has the starter in front of the engine.

The following pictures give you an idea.

I don't know. When I did the work on the starter motor on my old Avensis, I took to the specialist who refurbished the unit. That was 8 years ago. If you know of a starter motor/alternator refurbisher in your area, you could ask them where they source their components.

I tried a Google search using - Toyota Avensis starter motor repair kit, with varying results. Everything seems geared towards replacement for the whole unit.
