hacking into the loom is not for the light hearted.

Hacking??? Hacking??? :ffs: ;) The connector crimps were carefully backed out of the connector shells and swapped over. It could be fairly easily re-instated to its original set up. I've seen what I consider some really nasty wiring bodges on t'internet. Possibly some on here, but I bite my keyboard (lip). Don't get me started on fecking Scotch locks!!! ;).

Seriously Dave, if you've got something in mind, just drop me a note and I'll be glad to see if I can help you out if you want. :thumbsup: Yours will be different again being a 2011 model.

Nowt wrong with scotchlocks when used in the right environment. Absolutely no good where weather can get at them.

I have a good mate who is a software engineer but he's exactly the opposite to the bodgit brigade. I've got a photo of him installing a manhole frame with a digital height gauge that measured to 0.01mm!!!!!!!!! I was speechless when I caught him so I just took a photo.

You really wanting DAB reception bad Kev? I am coming up to the 'briggs tomorrow in my aftermarket-DAB equipped car and you can have a wee shot and see if that method would suit? (Got a spare DAB radio as well going cheap ;) - check out "pure highway" if of interest?)

Hmmm. Nah. Don't like IDC types anywhere near any of my vehicle harness, whether they are in cab or not. We'll have to agree to disagree on that one. :thumbsup:

Inadvertently Disconnected Connectors are well known to eejits like me.....the very reason I do not Interfere with Direct Current.......now, by ma own standards, that is not bad........?

I'll go for that one Chris. I still think they are OK in a dry clean environment. I wouldn't put any load through them.

Yeah, I know they do and if such a kit was fitted to mine, I'd be finding a suitable connector crimp end to take a feed from and not using their nasty locks. May take a bit longer but....

Those kits are, I would expect, Toyota UK spec'ed..........

Plus, if you need to remove anything like that for any reason, you're then left with a nice puncture hole in your harness insulation. Tape I suppose, but it just starts to look a messy bodge.

I just don't like them.

OK, it's nothing like under bonnet, or external, but you can still get a fair amount of condensation in cab, and vibration and a wide temperature variation...

In my youth I used them for towbar connections. I wouldn't use them for anything now as the design of the connectors can really only fit a narrow band of cable sizes and the thinner ( XLPE? ) cabling now used on the RAV ( for the most part ) is too thin to ensure that you get a sensible area of contact between the conductor and the slotted plate in the connector. I'm a great fan of soldered connections covered in a couple of layers of heatshrink. But I'm an old curmudgeon :g:

Well Andy says it was simple... But the truth is it would have been very difficult for me to do.... 6 or. 7 wires had to be removed from a large I think. 24 pin connector and re distributed to a different connector and one removed and moved within the same one....

My hands are like bunches of bananas so this removal if the tiny pins would have been a right game ... The Ariel adapter also had to be wired up before it would accept a signal ..

In no way would I describe the job as a straight forward swap. ....

Andy has done the pin swaps for the camera so I will have a nose round on here to see if I can complete the job ...

Hmmm, in days of y'old the first thing I used to do after buying a car was upgrade the stereo, hacking into the loom

is not for the light hearted. On RAv4 World they seem to favour aftermarket units and using adapter leads for the

steering wheel controls. Will have to think about this one, anyways, glad you are sorted.

Every so called Car Audio specialist I went to just hadn't got a clue, The first one who specializes in custom installations declared it was simply not possible because the 9004 was not amplified and the 9017 was ! I of course had not a scooby but thought Andy would have already said this when the subject first came up.. He was of course talking utter bowlarks ..

Another said the ariel adapter was resistive and the 9017 unit was resistive,, Again complete and utter carp...

Hacking into the loom is not as you say for the faint hearted.. Even with Andys instructions Im still happy I did not have a go.. The Fire brigade have enough to do I think !

How about a photo of the completed installation Charlie? Do the steering wheel controls for the phone work?

It will work in so much as it will almost certainly power up and the speakers will be connected. The main power connectors and speaker connectors are usually common across Toyota units.

You'll need an adapter lead for the FM antenna. It doesn't have DAB, it's just "DAB ready" to connect the optional DAB adapter.

Unfortunately between the B9004 and the B9017, some of the connector pinout has changed. Thinks like the microphone pinout for the hands free phone has moved pins. So hand-free won't work.

You'll run into similar problems (not impossible to solve) with both the TNS510 and the touch and go.

The TNS510 was intended to be dealer fit and for example, the phone microphone is shown placed on the steering column cowl. Does the ebay unit come with all the accessories? Phone mic? There is also a ipod/usb harness if you want to use that function on it.

Likewise, the touch and go will work up to a point (power up and speakers connected), but to get it fully working it will need some harness modifications. Antenna adapter again and some other fiddling. The usb/ipod harness doesn't have to be connected, but again, you'll need it if you want those functions.

All three are going to be easier than an aftermarket unit, but perhaps not that much easier.

Having said that, I personally don't think it's too difficult. I've got a fully functional T&G plus (inc steering controls, usb, handsfree phone and voice command) that I installed in an Urban Cruiser. It really depends how much fiddling you want to do, how confident you are and how easy you find reading wiring diagrams.

Have you got the information on the pinouts for these units, please?

Particularly the hands free details?
