Auris - Water In Rear Light

Hello Forum Members!

This has probably been reported a number of times so if someone can point me to some good links / previous responses that would be great

I have a 2008 Auris and there is about 10mm of water in the passenger side rear light cluster

From the postings I've seen the fault should be due to a perished seal.

I'm guessing the advice is remove the lens - drain any water and then replace with a Toyota Light Seal Kit?

As always any guidance would be appreciated

Regards

Stu

You've got it in one.

I had the same problem on my old Megane. emptied and then tucked a bag of silica gel where the wires are to keep it dry again.

I had the same as well with a Ford Escort. Was very easy to fix, hopefully it will be easy in the Auris as well. I just got a new seal from Ford. It did strike me as being a daft design though, all the water ran down a channel right to where the rear lights were. I've not really noticed what it is like in the Auris.

I'm having some problems removing the lens

1. Removed the 10mm nut on the bumper

2. Rermoved the 10mm nut on the extended thread

3. Removed the other 10mm nut on the extended thread

4. Unclipped the bulbs

5. Pressed in the bottom blue clip

Still won't come out - does anyone have some Haynes type pictures and guidance..... my fat fingers would definitely appreciate it

Cheers

Stu

Sorry I am not English speaker, but I will try to explain myself here ;)

I had the same problem with water coming in the left rear light. It is common issue for Auris , as I understood. I fixed the problem in simple and easy way. You don't have to take out the light or put silicon. I heated up a narrow metal wire until its red, and put a hole in the light. This helps the water to get out, and does not let the water to come through it. Newer saw water after doing this ;)

Mission Accomplished

Right this is how I did it

Remove the access panel in the boot

Undo the two 10mm nuts on the extended thread

Press in the 'wings' on the two blue plastic fixings (one bottom & one at the top). The fixing at the top is a right pain to get off and will take a bit of patience!

There are two rubber bungs filling a couple of holes in the bodywork (remove these)

Remove the light fitting(s) from the lens

The Lens can now be removed, there is a locating plastic pin on the outer edge so you'll have to come out square and may have to pull with reasonable force. Don't snatch / tug at the unit apply equal pressure

The lens should now be out

Remove as much of the water as you can. If you have time leave the lens off overnight use some silica gel to dry completely. This wasn't an option for me so I used kitchen roll & toothbrush and a finished with a hairdryer

I then removed the old seal and cleaned the back of the light with nail varnish remover..... but white spirit / alchohol wipes / screen cleaner would have been just as good

Fitted new seal from Mr T

Went back to the car and followed the Haynes Manual saying "Fitting is the reverse of removal"

With the lens back in the car I ran a small bead of silicon along the top edge of lens (approx 2 - 3 cms) this was to 'push' the water down the side channel and not behind the lens

This doesn't need to be done but:- I drilled two tiny holes at the bottom of the lens just to let out any water if I hadn't done the top bit properly. The holes are the size of a sewing needle

The last two days have seen really heavy rain and no water has made it in..... so 'touch wood'..... job done!

Hope this helps someone else who needs some advice

ive noticed a damp patch on the carpet for the first time this weekend nearside corner under the light and at the bottom of the nearside wheelarch carpet lining (totally dry beneath the spare wheel) cant see any water in the light from the outside (would water be visible from the outside if there ? ) would it be okay to use clear sealant over the top of the lens and also seal between the red plastic thats attached to the light lens and the metal bodywork , so any water would have to run between the light lens and the rubber that goes round the edge of the boot ?

My carpet was also damp in the corner as well and also didn't have any water in the spare wheel well....... when replacing the seal I decided against using silicone all the way round as I didn't know how Toyota have designed the 'soak away'

You could try it but be prepared to remove the light fitting and silicone if it didn't work
