Avensis T25 2.2 D4D Maf Sensor

My cars performance deteriorated over a week. Poor throttle responce under 2000rpm. Loads of smoke. Difficult to pull away on incline. Does it sound like a faulty maf sensor. If so where can I buy one on a budget. Incidentally removed the sensor and doused it in electrical contact cleaner. Waited an hour for it to dry refitted no change. Disconnected the plug connection, the car still ran. Any ideas?

Thanks

Hello Ben,

it's probably the EGR valve that needs cleaning out, also if the fuel filter hasn't been changed recently do that also.

There is a good tutorial for cleaning the EGR valve on the forum if you do a search or ask your local garage to do it for you.

Regards

Pete.

As my good mate Peter has said it could be the EGR valve! Changing the fuel/air filter is always a good place to start.

Have you pulled out any fault codes? It could be that the MAF has given up...

Thanks for the replies.

Had a fuel and oil filter change recently. Put a new air filter in yesterday. Some months ago the vsc , abs sensor and eng management lights came on intermitantly. Put redex diesel additive in at every fill up and the lights stayed off and the engine seemed to run smoother. Got it booked in monday for a diagnostic assessment. Will keep you posted. Could the redex have caused a problem?

Redex wouldn't have caused a problem! But there are far better products out there like BG244 and Archoil. Hope you're not using supermarket fuels? Try some V-Power love juice in it. 🚙💨

had the same myself recently .... EGR valve needed a clean ... it didn't look too bad, but the difference was incredible. you'll need a can of carb cleaner and about 30mins...

Cleaned egr valve. Garage diagnotics revealed no problems. Still drives like a dog. Took it for a thrash on the a30. Loads of smoke. Still hesitates on pulling away. Booked in to diesel specialist.

Car went to diesel engineer who after a diagnostic session stripped the egr valve. I thought I had got rid of all the carbon build up but the valve was not seating properly allowing gases to leak by. Interestingly he told me to stick with the car saying that Toyotas were considerably more reliable that any of the other brands including vw audi and the french marques.

Thanks for the advice.

You mean after your cleaning, the EGR was clean but not closed fully?

Did you see how big was the gap and how the enginer fixed it?

Is everithing OK now?

Yes even though I scraped loads of carbon out the valve had a tiny gap that allowed gases to escape through. The valve needs to be released from its return spring to clean the seat thoroughly. It looked too fiddly so I left it. I will leave these jobs to a professional in future. Car now runs like its supposed to. Pulls away with virtualy no throttle. Will pull up an incline in fourth no problem.
