It is BAD news for electric cars and good news for desel cars.

Purchase price minus retained value = depreciation.

Depreciation comes out as:

Diesel cars (100 minus 44.7) = 55.3% depreciation

Petrol cars : (100 minus 43.6) = 56.4% depreciation

Electric cars: (100 minus 20.2) = 79.8% depreciation

Hybrid cars presumably classed as Electric? or Petrol?

Plug In Prius classed as Electric? (eg. 31% depreciation in one year from new).

No mention of diesel hybrids though.

Presumably with cars like the Nissan Leaf, Renault Zoe, etc, where with some versions you have to lease the Battery packs, that deflates the car's value.

Read the original article. It gives a separate figure for hybrids which indicates that they hold their value best of all.

The HYBRID car figures are as follows:

Loss in value / depreciation:

(100-55.3) = 44.7% depreciation

which is much better than the other figures quoted for different car types

I think there's still a 'slip of the mouse' here. The original figure for hybrid retained value is 45.3%, giving a depreciation of 54.7%.

In spite of this being the highest retained value (lowest depreciation) it stil strikes me that it is a shocking condemnation of modern car design that a car can be worth only half it's original cost after only three years. I've read several times that modern cars are designed for a life of only seven years. What a waste of materials and effort.

Nothing to do with car design, the same cars will keep higher residuals in other countries. All to do with the UK obsession with the newest/best, tax breaks on fleets, etc. I would reckon!

I'm not complaining quite yet though, as it makes for decent 1-2 year old bargains ;-)
