Hi Gary and a big welcome to the TOC

On the right above the posts you will find a box marked Search and if you enter something like RAV4 replacement key in there and press the little glass on there then there is plenty of info available to you.

Having recently been through the process of acquiring an additional key for my 2004 XT4, I will pass on the knowledge I gained from the experience.

Firstly, purchasing one from your local dealer is likely to be far too expensive to even consider.

The most important thing you need to know is exactly what key you require. Whilst most second-hand keys you will see on auction sites look the same, their inner workings are many and varied. I purchased my used 'Denso' key on the strength of its having the same part number stamped on the inner casing as was in my original master key - which came with the car.

Beware there are also various key manufacturers used by Mr T. Check what you have and find the same. 'Valeo' is also a common make.

Beware of the dealers in used keys on the 'bay - they usually won't state or show what is actually inside the key they are selling and don't answer questions as to its identity. Only buy if you are certain it is what you need.

There are also traders selling Far Eastern copy keys on the 'bay etc. but I cannot vouch for them. I chose to purchase a used OEM key.

Assuming you have sourced a used key, you will then need to find a suitable host key Shell from t'internet in which to fit its electronic module. I bought one of the aftermarket flip-key shells from the 'bay for about 6 quid and it is very good but beware the need to remove the transponder chip from the old key module and reposition it into a slot provided in the new key Shell - else it is too far from the key detector loop on the steering column.

Obviously, you will need to visit your local key cutting establishment who will be able to cut your new key blank to the pattern of the original key.

Finally, the key needs to be programmed to the car. Firstly, the immobiliser has to be programmed to accept the new key and then the remote/central locking function seperately.

Programming details are all over the internet but beware the immobiliser has a limit on the number of times it will accept new keys - so try to get it right first time.

Total cost of mine was 30 quid.

Hope this helps.

John

As you say - theres loads of references to programming Rav immobiliser chips and remotes but some of the information is conflicting and it would be worthwhile detailing the procedure you used on your model. As an aside - it's better to get a key cut from the code rather than copying - with the latter, you also copy wear patterns. (keys are softer than the lock tumblers so it's key's that tend to wear). If you haven't got the code - your dealer will obtain it subject to proof of ownership etc.

Hi,, I had this problem. The thing is my Toyota dealer would not program a key bought from elsewhere. I had to purchase a new key which cost £150 .I know it was expensive but at the time I was desperate. K

Here are the programming methods that worked for my 2004 XT4. Standard Immobiliser and TVSS4-D alarm system fitted.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

IMMOBILISER Procedure:

Make sure all doors and windows are closed.

Insert and remove master key in the ignition cylinder 5 times and leave in cylinder at end of sequence.

Open and close the driver side door 6 times

Remove the master key - security light on dash should be illuminated.

Insert new blank key - security light begins flashing.

After approx. 1 minute the security light should extinguish - at this point the key is programmed.

Remove new key, insert original master key and start the engine. Turn off and process is terminated.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

REMOTE/CENTRAL LOCKING Procedure:

1. Start: Driver's door open and unlocked. Key not inserted in the ignition.
2. Insert programmed master key in ignition and then remove it, without turning it.
3. Do the following with the driver's door: shut, open, shut, open, all within 40 secs.
4. Insert key in ignition and then remove it, without turning it.
5. Repeat step 3.
6. Close driver's door.
7. Insert key in ignition
8. Turn key from Lock to On and back to Lock with a 1 second interval. The number of times you do this will select the desired programming mode: Once for ADD key, twice for REWRITE all keys, 3 times for CONFIRMATION, 5 times for PROHIBITION.
9. Remove key from ignition.
10. As verification of mode selection (except in Confirmation mode), the electric door locks will lock and unlock a number of times corresponding to the mode chosen in step 8.
(If Confirmation mode is selected, the doors will lock/unlock a number of times corresponding to the number of remote controls programmed into the system.)
11. For ADD and REWRITE modes: within 25 seconds after the locks have confirmed the selected mode:
(11a) Hold down the LOCK button on the new remote control whilst at the same time pressing UNLOCK 5 times. (11b) Release and press LOCK once. (11c) if the procedure has been performed correctly, the door locks will go from lock to unlock. If not, start from 1 again.
(11d) To enter additional remotes, repeat from step (11a).
12. Open driver's door to complete the procedure.

Quite a tedious procedure but I reckon the best way is to read and learn the process so you can complete all actions within a matter of a few seconds - any delay will 'time-out' the procedure.

Good luck

John

This is not going to be much help I am afraid but a local locksmith cut one for me which of course being a transponder, needed to have a chip inserted and then programmed to the engine because it has to not only unlock the door but dissable the alarm and then start the engine.

I rang three places which quoted £180 - £160 and £150......! He did it for £90 which was much better AND... he came over to me and did it on the drive... so keep ringing round your local locksmith that specialise in "car Keys"

Good Luck

£90 is very good for home service. You can buy a new aftermarket key for the 4.2 Rav for around £40 (including cutting the new key blade). Full details of self programming the remote and immobiliser are given earlier in this topic.

A decent alternative might be the metal spare keys which get made by Elgin Locksmith. Most Toyota Rav4 didn't come with them, but you can still order them. These locksmiths are very efficient in making spare keys for any type of vehicle.

Just to add, for the benefit of anyone searching:

There are two different immobilisers used in RAV 4.2 2004-2005.  One (with the 4C chip) is programmable by the method given above. The other (4D chip) requires the use of Toyota Techstream.  The only way to know for sure which you have is to check the VIN against the Toyota Parts catalog.  Some key suppliers can do this. I bought mine (an aftermarket  key, not from Mr T) from http://www.car-keys-online.com/, who can identify what you need from the VIN,.  I bought a Techstream disk and cable on eBay, and it worked first go.  Just for fun, I tried the "hokey-cokey" method, and it did not.  My module is a DENSO 1512V, but I do not know whether all  such modules are 4D chips - one would hope so, but...... .

A word of caution.  The remote entry systems in some US cars are different to the models for Europe, so there may be a risk in getting a key from a US supplier.

For UK customers, I recommend Car Keys Online.  If you quote your VIN, they will ensure you get the module with the correct chip for your car.
