Mr2 Performance Air Filter

I have bought an MR2 without an MOT and has sat for approx 2 years.

It had a performance air filter on it that had rusted from the inside, so it was sucking in big chips of rust. I changed that to a K&N "type" air filter that fits straight onto the air inlet pipe for £14, and seems to do the job, however the Air sensor is not plugged in, and I don't want to plug it back in in case it affects the cars performance. Does anyone know how it is or will affect the car?
