High Idle Revs On Cold Day

Hello All

Only had my 2009 Auris 1.33 Stop Start TR for 6 months, when it was a cold morning this week (-2 or -3) the car idled at around 1500 revs even when fully warmed up never had a car idle at this level in cold weather before so i phoned the local Toyota Dealer for advise and the tech man told me this was normal something to do with the engine running lean and having to keep the heat in the cat, i did have the radio, aircon and rear window demister on for most of the journey which was only 6 miles. The reason i am posting is to ask others if this is normal with their Auris's, i suppose i should believe the dealer chap but just seems a bit strange.

Thanks

PS Car idles as 'normal' (750rpm) when temp outside is above freezing.

In my previous 2009 Auris 1.33 and the present 2012 one, the engine idle speed is higher when the temperature is below 0 degrees - though not as high as 1500rpm. Then again as they were/are garaged, they don't get that cold, and don't need demisting, so I don't need the air con on - perhaps this extra loading is the difference in idle speed.

Thanks for the reply Mike will have to wait until the temp drops again to see if it happens again.

Just put our other car away (2012 Hyundai i20). Temperature outside 5 degrees C. 1,000 rpm idle without air con/heated rear window on.

from an Avensis point of view it's normal to have a high idle (but probably around 1200rpm) in cold weather withe extra load (aircon, demist, headlights etc.).
