Electrical Problems

Recommended Posts

My 1999 Avensis Estate has, today, suffered multiple failures of switches and speedometer.

The Heater switch does not work, the power widows do not work, the rear demister switch also fails to work and the Speedometer stays at Zero.

I expect this is a fuse/relay problem but I do not know where to start.

All suggestions gratefully received!

?Is the Battery/alternator in good condition, this can happen when there is little enough power in the Battery.

Thanks for the reply!

As far as I know the Battery is OK but certainly is "of an age"!

Car has done 90K miles and the Battery may be, like the exhaust which I have just changed, original.

Will have a check done on the Battery and will report back.

?Was the power steering fault light on,if so this is a surefire indication that the Battery/alternator is fubarrd.

When ignition switched on, all warning lights are lit, when the engine starts all the lights go out.

The car has no problem starting, which makes me doubt a Battery problem.

I have a feeling that a relay may be at fault.

I'd look for a common fault rather than a relay... maybe like a main wire somewhere with a bad connection, or a bad earth or something.

I would check every single fuse buddy.

Fuses checked and OK. Problem still there.

Will contact my regular, wonderful, garage that do all my maintenance and get them to check it out.

They have always been 100% honest and charge resonable,(not Manufacturers) rates.

I once had a problem with a car heater fan switch.

When the car was in for a service it was fixed with no charge.

It required soldering a weak connection and they did not even mention it when I collected the car.

Another time, the Toyota exhaust failed. Since I was not near my normal garage I took it to an "Exhaust Specialist" (Not KF!)

They noted that the exhaust was the original and the car had done 80,000 miles and suggested a complete replacement for £250.

I declined their offer, went to my usual garage who fitted, without charge, a new gasket and bolts at the failed connection.

I was told that they would tell me when my exhaust required replacing!!

That is why I trust them!

Took the car to the garage.

They "fixed" the problem of "a blown fuse! (Number 18 in the Toyota Handbook.)

Before I collected the car, they took it out for a test drive to check that the speedometer was working.

When reverse gear was selected the fuse blew!!

As a temporary measure they have disconnected the reversing lights and suggested that a mouse may well be the culprit! ( I stay out in the country!!)

No charge for the work!!

I did say they were good!!!

Looks like a return visit may be due!!
