Starter Motor :(

So. I bought a 55 plate 1.3 colour collection 3 door with 29K on the clock. Nice little car. A week later and when i crank it in the morning it fires and the starter spins for up to 1 sec after it starts. The dealer says it needs greasing but a garage near me say you cant grease a starter.....thoughts? I've had a price of £135 to put a new one in.

Any chance it could be ignition barrel that needs greasing? If it takes a bit longer to turn off the starter in the morning, perhaps it's sticking on the return from the 'turn over' to the 'on' position. Might be something as simple as a return spring.

Can I ask if your car actually has a colour in it's paint job? I only ask because my first car was a Corolla Colour Collection, and it was available in the eye-popping spectrum of silver, black or grey. Still don't know if it was idiocy, an in-gag or some sort of Japanese Zen that I haven't yet discovered.

It sounds as if the pinion is sticking . You need to remove the starter to check, the pinion shaft will probably be contaminated with dust from the clutch which will not be helping matters. It needs cleaning then just a trace of oil to ensure the pinion moves freely.

Have things changed as I was taught yonks ago that even a trace of oil will cause dust to stick ?

Yes oil does attract dust etc. So you are quite right. That is why I said a trace. There will be plenty of clutch dust on the pinion and the shaft which turns into a filthy paste and causes the pinion to stick. After cleaning, I would say a little oil then wipe the oil off. Even better would be graphite or one of the teflon lubricants which would not attract the clutch dust as much.
