Auris Exhaust Upgrade

So I'm looking at upgrading my exhaust, model is 1.6 petrol as many of you know. There has been topics regarding exhaust upgrades but as far as I remember there was no answers to the questions I am going to ask. I tried looking once more but did not find anything, so I decided to start a new topic.

I have Remus muffler which cannot be heard from the inside. Only outside and the tone is very nice, not loud but sporty. This is the way I want it to stay, but it could be a bit louder, still not disturbing though as I want to be able to drive the car. I would like just a bit more of sound and better response. So probably I would need more flow.

What have you guys actually done to your exhaust systems? Did anyone replace the big bomb looking resonator with an aftermarket one, or just upgraded the pipework? Or did you just change the muffler?

I've heard that removing the resonator would bring a bit more sound and more flow. But I also found some info that without the stock resonator Auris becomes very, very loud. I am in doubt. So has anyone replaced the stock resonator with another one? Would like to hear your opinions.

Here is the original piping with muffler. And the biggest part is the resonator, which is huge :D

Here is a picture of upgraded system with new piping, smaller resonator and upgraded muffler.

I used a resonating back box on my corolla not sure if that means you can do away with resonator or not . I just run sports cat into resonating back box rest just 2 half inch pipe work it sounded ok but fitted by local exhaust builder was 299 from manifold back

Yeah that's what my local company is offering for me too. New piping with smaller resonator, but I suspect it may be just too loud :/ Which corolla was it?

Try going up about half an inch (or 12mm) in pipe diameter. That way it'll flow more exhaust fumes & quicker, w/out being ridiculously loud or making an annoying boomy noise when cruising on a steady throttle. This is assuming you'll still use a back box & a small central resonator. I did this on my Nissan with good results - made 3bhp/5 lbs/ft more torque and a nice sporty burble to go with it :)

Yeah Paul that's what I've been suggested to do by a local company. But I've read on another forum that with small custom central resonator Auris sounded crazy loud. Trying to find some reason for that in order not to make any mistake. Did he just have bad central resonator or is it related to car model and system? I wouldn't really want to fit one just to find out it is crazy loud indeed, just like he said :D

Yeah, fair point dude. Have you tried Youtube for any possible vids of modded Auris exhausts ? Might give you a better idea of which mods sound better than others ? :driving:

I've been looking through some vids in the past but the result seems to be so dependent of the video and audio capture equipment that even if I'd found something it would be probably extremely difficult to compare. Also the playback equipment changes the sound which makes impossible to tell how it sounds in real life...

Found something just accidentally, what a co-incidence. I was looking for something else and then this. Two videos of a same car, one with stock system and another with central muffler replaced with a small sportive one. What do you think guys? Pretty hard to say and it seems loud on the video with aftermarket middle muffler, but not so big difference when comparing the two videos.

Quite like the second vid actually - sporty without being ridiculously noisy. I guess we all like different things though, so down to your opinion mate ...... :)

I went to the exhaust specialists today and they confirmed the following: it's not possible to put aftermarket rear muffler if it's straight through (like my remus) and then add free flow torpedo. The car will become impossible to drive as it will be so loud. Only need to get special rear muffler to mute the sound or leave middle muffler as it is. This is because of the engine which is ordinary petrol and without turbo. On diesels and petrol turbos it doesn't change the sound that much even if you put full free flow. On an engine like this it's necessary to dump the sound somewhere. Of course I decided to leave my system as it is because this is the best option for me. Thanks for all your input.

Weird!

My old veccy estate 1.8 had a straight through and Remus box it sounded lovely!

Dunno maybe I should get second opinion from another company, seemed a bit like these guys weren't really interested in doing this for one reason or another. But I've read about one Auris which had whole system done and it was way too loud so it's easy to believe those guys on the other hand...

Also I suppose too loud is a matter if opinion, hope you get it sorted mate.

Well it was a guy with very good taste when it comes to car modding and he said it was IMPOSSIBLE to stand the noise. Maybe for occasional cruising for some 16 year old it would've been ok but not to be used as daily by a guy who has taste.

Here is a link to his car's exhaust sound video clip and some pictures too.

I can totally understand what you're saying. It's true that turbo'd & supercharged engines actually swallow or mask some of the noise that you would hear with an N/A engine. That's one of the reasons that modded Civic Type R's can be so loud - n/a engine, high revs & big bore exhaust pipes. It's a recipe for your neighbours to hate you, lol !

You could try upgrading to a Fox Exhaust to free up a bit more flow

So they're making full kit or just back boxes? Doesn't look very nice when it's on both sides and also wouldn't want to waste my old good Remus box. I listened to the sound and it's not much different compared to mine so wouldn't bring one of the needed benefits.

As far as I know, they only do backbox for the Auris.

Ok, but I don't see any sense in changing back box as I allready have one aftermarket on. What's the point?

Yeah Traxx has nice sounding system, but way too loud. It is without the torpedo (central muffler). That is Varex he has isn't it?

I reckon my double double exit sits nice? Not to big and the jap slant squashed oval works with the body.
