Hello there, I have a 1.0 litre yaris and I am wondering what modifications that I could do to it? I would like to lower it and add a back box however I would like to upgrade some parts under the bonnet!

I need some tips and advise into what I could use to improve this?

Hello Daniel. I'd have a look online there's quite a lot you can do but I'd be careful as it's only a small engine. I seen for my aygo you can supercharge them.. Don't think I'd do it myself as it would most probably ruin the whole engine! Maybe take a look at the yaris t-sport. As for the image you could always tint windows, flock the dashboard, get some alloys, private plate, white lights etc. got any pics of your yaris? :)

Thankyou Bethany, I know that I can't do much to the engine knowing that it is only a 1.0 litre however Id like to see what I can actually do and give it a go. I've thought of a couple of interior ideas and I like the thought of tinting the back windows. This is my little beaut haha, don't judge I've only just got her and only just passed my driving test haha it will get there!

When you say black box do you mean for cheaper insurance, if so make sure you tell them about all changes to your vehicle or you may find yourself without cover.

They are not keen on customers that try to alter the cars driving characteristics such as lowering it, changing wheels or trying to boost the engine.

It looks like a tidy car, you should run it for a couple of years without tweaking it just to build up your no claims bonus

I do agree that you should avoid tweaking it, I want to make a start on my aygo but only doing visual like flocking the dashboard ect nothing for power though!

Yeah to be honestly I completely agree! I think the only reason I want to do stuff power wise is because of friends having more powerful cars however Id rather ride around with style, I can always get a project car to work on with stuff like that there isn't any need in ruining a perfectly good yaris haha! I do like the look of the flocking of the dashboard! I want to get it carbon dipped

Sorry didn't mean to do that lol! I know what you mean my boyfriend has an astra Vxr and at first I wanted mine to match the speed but as I got used to my car I accepted it just focus on visual mods first then if you still want performance go for it x

Oh wow, what plate and colour is his Astra? They are immensely quick, if you made your aygo go as quick as that then il have to take my hat off to you haha!! I think il stick to making it looks good! I wanna try and get a spoiler for it but there quite expensive for what they are!

Go ahead and modify it! You're only young once and you're first car should be memorable.

I just turned 19 and got my Yaris when I was 18. Mine is a 1.3.

I fabricated a custom back box delete pipe and its currently sitting on matte black BSA racing alloys.

Doing the exhaust is definitely a good start, mine pops and bangs when I change gear, being a little boy racer is fun :).

Check out my thread: http://www.toyotaownersclub.com/forums/topic/159898-hello/

Here's my progress list:

exhaust (done)

wheels (done)

suspension (still deciding on what springs to get)

new steering wheel

short shifter

sports seats

I would say you won't damage the car with an exhaust and springs. Just don't do one of those cold air intake things cos they let lots of dirt into your engine. Change the oil often if you drive it hard and you'll be fine.

Oh wow! I'm going to change the back box and lower it but I'm not sure how to lower it in terms of what springs to use tbh! I also wanna change the steering wheel! I don't want to spend too much on the car tho because it is only my first car but I have to learn somewhere haha!

HI,

If you decide to modified your car and you have any problems with insurance then please feel free to drop me a line.

Regards,

Dan.

I will do mate! I doubt they will so much about just lowering it and adding an exhaust back box however I just want to ask if anyone has installed an exhaust back box or bucket seats and how easy they are to put in?

Daniel. Speak to your insurance company FIRST!!

They do not like to insure young chaps who have just passed their test and want to modify their cars

In your own words you want a faster car because your friends cars are faster, imagine the sharp intake of breath if your insurer heard you mutter that!!

If you want a faster car then by all means have one, go out and buy a 1.3 Yaris, you cannot do too much to a 1.0 without spending a fortune on it

My old fella told me when I passed my test 35 years or more ago "Now you have passed your test-you can now start to learn how to drive" how true that is. Having a piece of paper to say you are legally entitled to drive is the start of your driving career, get some experience under your belt before getting more power and lowering it. We don't want you to be another young driver statistic!

Thankyou I'm going to talk to the insurance company about ascetic additions like lowering and weight reduction due to the plain fact that I have come to the conclusion that I will just wait for a couple of years and get a faster car! I'd rather get a project car and wait till I have a couple of years no claims than do stuff now and run the risk of ruining the car etc!

I completely agree with you with the quote, in the week that I have been driving on my own I have learned a hell of a lot! I feel a lot more comfortable on the road in a car now I have had the chance to suss everything else out for myself!

In truth Daniel, lowering the car and weight reduction are not aesthetic additions, they are about one thing, making the car go faster or better handling whilst going faster. Your insurance company are not going to buy that at any cost.......IMHO

Good luck

There is no harm in seeing what they say! If they don't allow it then that is no problem I just won't do it haha

As P-K says, insurers are funny.

What you need to understand is that there are two parts to the insurance (if comprehensive) - damage to you and your car (limited values) and damage to third parties (potentially huge values).

Inexperienced drivers are hammered mainly because of the latter part. The risk involves, in simple terms, the driver's attitude.

An older driver in an unmodified car is likely to have a 'sedate' attitude - low risk.

A young driver in an unmodified car is likely to be inexperienced, but 'perhaps' is just needing to get about - moderate risk.

Almost anyone who 'tarts up' their car, even just cosmetically, is presumably planning to show off even if the car doesn't go any faster - I'll let you work out how an insurer views that for risk.

All of those risks get adapted with your experience - ie. age, time driving and no claims years.

That Is a very good way to think about it! I suppose many people just don't declare there modifications to the insurers however I don't want to risk doing that haha! I'm going to find my insurers soon and see what they say can and can't be done!

If you carry out any modifications that affect the handling/power you'll probably end up needing to swap to one of the 'specialist insurers'. A lot of the normal 'High Street insurers' won't touch your modified car with a barge pole. You'd need to ask them to be sure, of course.

Yeah that's what I was thinking! I'm going to get in contact with them and see what they say!
