No idea really. Put some low ash 2 stroke oil in the diesel and it smokes no more. I buy mine from Morrisons! 2 quid a pop...

It shouldnt smoke at all! The car maybe needs a software update which effects the usage of the 5th injector. Has the car ever had a replacement engine - what sort of miles are on it?

I have not had it that long and the previous owner didn't mention anything about it so I don't know if it's had a software update.

It's done 100,000 miles and I have no idea if it has had replacement engine.

  • 1 month later...

I'm desperate for some help I luv the car but it's really bugging me :( !!!

Had it checked by a specialist who said there is no hg problem at all injectors are running spot on and was told to put sum dpf cleaner in the tank which I did, but it's still smoking. I used forte dpf cleaner in a full tank of fuel.

Since I last posted it has got a bit worse, sometimes it smokes when the car is just idling, but smokes more when I go into second gear.

My last full tank of fuel was bp ultimate for which I think about 54 litres gave me 290 miles which I think is rubbish tbh using this seemed to make it worse overall.

Ain't got a clue what else to anybody got any suggestions please :)

Okay...

1st... When was the fuel filter last changed?

2nd. When was the air filter changed?

3rd. Have you cleaned the MAF?

4th. Forte is not the best cleaner out there! BG244 is far better with a tank full of Shell V-Power GTL juice

5th. Clean the EGR valve.

This list is not in a particular order.

You are in Cardiff! I am down the road! I have a 5L can of Archoil juice that cost me £300. We could put some in your tank

You won the pools Taff ?

There should be no smoke from a DPF equipped vehicle... steam/condensation yes.

I would pay for an hours labour at a Toyota dealership, they will tell you exactly what's going on. I really hope it isn't but that's what mine did when the head gasket went. It has never smoked after the engine replacement . Your local Toyota dealer is your best bet!

What engine do you have? Are you sure it's a T180? Just I'm confused by the car year in your profile - 2005??? Nearly sure there aren't any T180s registered in 05! I could be wrong tho

Powerenhancer has a Aug Bank holiday offer of 25% discount off Archoil products using the code ARCH25

Thanks for the reply :)

The air and fuel filters were changed roughly 6,000 miles ago using non genuine parts along with Mobil 1 esp.

Maf sensor I have never cleaned and the egr valve was cleaned not long ago.

I have also been thinking about it to going to main dealer but tbh I don't wanna pay md prices but the mechanic I always use is an ex toyota tech.

I checked coolant and oil this morning all seems well though. Was yours the Same to showing no signs like this ?

I havnt updated my profile yet but my car is a t180 on 08 plate the 05 was my previous car.

Good choice of oil! Think I'm gonna use that at next oil change, I'm running Shell helix ultra extra 5w30. Wouldn't worry about the non genuine filters, they are likely to be reputable brands anyway.

I had smoke when accelerating but mine is a 2004 2.0 d4d, I changed fuel filter and cleaned maf one of these made it much better. I cleaned the inlet manifold the other day it was as bad as this one on ebay;

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Toyota-Avensis-Verso-2-0-d4d-03-06-Inlet-Manifold-/121417009729?pt=UK_CarsParts_Vehicles_CarParts_SM&hash=item1c45048a41

I ended up using a pressure washer and two bottles of carb cleaner.

feels like I may gained a few bhp by doing that

main reason I did it as my mpg is low;

I already cleaned the egr and throttle body about 3/4 weeks ago.

The problem with these low ash C2/C1 oils us they have such a low TBN number compared with the likes of Mobil 1ect. So it's really important to change the oil every 6k.

Personally I wouldn't be changing Mobil 1 esp at 6,000 - it's the recommended oil for Longlife service for VAG and BMW so, 1 year 10k miles is more than adequate IMO even under harsh conditions.

Mobil 1 esp and Shell Helix Ultra Extra 5w-30 are both VW 507 00 spec (Will be replaced with 508 00) but with these types of C2 low ash oil the Total Base Numbers (Anti wear! Higher the number the better) is quite low @ around 7 compaired to "Normal" synthetics at well over 10.

Now years ago it was deemed prudent to use an alkaline oil to combat the acidity produced when burning heavy oil (Diesel) in combustion! As the acid produced would affect the oil and have a negative affect on engine parts and reduce there working life. But with the onset of the full synthetic and Ester and double Ester oils that break down a lot slower than mineral and semi synthetic so drain periods could be extended.

Having said that... I would quite happily leave oil in for 10k in a Petrol powered ride! But in a Diesel with these daft low ash oils for these DPF! No way... But that's just me! What you have to look at is how many of these "Modern" Diesels cover over 300k? I've not heard of any!... But how many older diesels found in the Peugeot/Citroen (PSA) group cars always cover 300k! I know this for a fact as my driving school cars always did... I rest my case me Lord. Lol :)

I know what you are saying, but you'd think an expensive long life oil would be up to the job of a 10k service interval - same with fuel, as long as it meets EN590, there shouldn't be any problems - I know of loads of modern diesels covering high miles with just normal servicing and ordinary diesel. I'm sure there are plenty of VAG cars that have covered high miles on Longlife servicing (2 years, 20k or something like that?) without problems due to advances in oils. I certainly wouldn't leave any oil in that long personally though.

I ran a VW Polo 1.4Tdi on a 2003 plate for years! Covering 230k. I serviced the car every 6-8k using Mobil 1 0-40 505 00 spec oil.. I also used Castrol Edge 5w-30 507 00 spec. I had a mate with Passet 130bhp Sport oil burner on the long life 20k or 2 year plan! You should have heard the sound of it!... Like a Tank! You heard it b4 you saw the car. My car was always quiet! Well... for a 3cyl diesel anyway...

My point is... Oil and a filter change is cheap if you can do it yourself! And could save you £££ in repair costs in the future. Also any buyer would like to see that the oil was changed frequently. But it's horses for courses at the end of the day...

**Update**

I have had the car checked by toyota who suspect the injectors are overfilling all of them because of the amount of smoke.

So next thing I'm gonna get my mechanic to actually take them out and check them all to make sure.

Also what are my options ?

Thanks for looking.
