Another A/c Problem - Need Help And Advice Please!

Hi guys,

New to the site and I come in search of some help with my a/c issues. I have spent many hours searching the forum but cannot find what Im looking for. Firstly my a/c has never worked since owning the car. So first of all I had the a/c re done and no change and no leaks found, guy had a look and said that will be the compressor potatoed ! Ok so have been looking into things and the clutch is not engaging on the compressor nor do the fans engage when the a/c switch is pushed. have checked power to the compressor with a/c wsitched on and without engine running it is only 5.4v with it running just over 6v. Am I right in saying this should be 12v and the reason why the clutch is not engaging and therfore no a/c. any help or advice on what could be causing the voltage drop would be greatly appriciated. Can anyone also tell me if this is due to a pressure switch??

I cannot help directly but seen as you have no help yet(someone should come around) I will upload the workshop manual for the aircon later see if that's any help. as far as I know they are sealed units.

I have attached some diagrams if needed in the future just in case its not the compressor.

All good gives me somthing to go at. Only thing I need to find out were the a/c pressure switch is located. Will have a look tomorrow and report back on my findings.........Thanks again.

Really appriciate the time you have taken. I have had a/c checked and re gassed today no leaks found at all. However once regassed this time the fans now kick in when a/c is switched on but still no clutch opperation. I have been through checked pressure switch and all fuses all ok. Still getting around 5v to the compressor. last of all for today put a direct 12v to the compressor and can hear clicking but clutch still not engaging. Does anyone know of anywere I can get a compressor for at a resonable price as need a/c sorted before run to france !!!

Could be a bit overkill, the dryer on laters cars can be built in to the condenser , if you buy a new compressor and get the system evacuated and then refilled, It should be fine.

As far as I'm aware, the evacuation process should remove any moisture....although maybe a chat with your local air/con specialist may confirm my thoughts :)

There is no clutch or solenoid on this system. So applying 12v will not switch it on. It is a variable volume compressor, the compressor receives a pulse signal from the ECU to set the volume required.

Note; As the system is always engaged it should not be run without refrigerant/oil otherwise it receives no lubricant.

Note the WS manual states this in an od way:

9. DO NOT OPERATE ENGINE AND COMPRESSOR

WITH NO REFRIGERANT IS FILLED

CAUTION:

This may damage the inside of the compressor because

the compressor parts always moves regardless of whether

the A/C system is turned on or off.

I found a leaking HP pipe on mine under the Battery, there is a sharp R Angle bend which seems to stress the pipe

Thanks for the info.but I have checked the and mine does have a clutch which does not engage when ac button is pressed. Have checked continuity all ok but when 12v is passed direct to the compressor it does not engage. Maybe this is different for later years as mine is a 2004?
