T180 Tyres - Shredded?!

Hello all,

I've had my t180 for around 5 months now. It came with a set of soft compound bridgestones on the front, which weren't new but not exactly used.

I've done roughly 4000 miles so far, and not really driven it round bends like a 17 year old handbrake enthused tw*t and haven't hit any pot holes/kerbs etc. So can someone tell me please, if this kind of wear on a soft compound tire is normal? If not, then how the hell..?! Obviously I'm not driving it at the minute until these tires are replaced.

Anyone recommend tires for it?

Cheers

wow i'd definitely get the tracking and suspension components checked too in case your new tyres suffer the same wear!

Not sure what tyre to recommend, but i do not recommend the Pirelli P6000 - I had these on my previous car - lasted 25,000miles on the front. On the Auris they lasted 11,000miles - evenly worn. I guess the compound of the P6000 doesn't suit the suspension setup.

Wonder if they were retreads...

Under inflation and overloading the tyre are the two biggest causes of tyre separation. You should also have the steering and suspension checked as mentioned above. There is a lot of torque on the T180, the particular tyre may not be suitable for that application, have you checked?

It should ideally be an extra-load tyre because of the 180's torque & front-end weight ......

Yeah, get XL tyres, jack up the PSI a bit. LRR/Harder compound tyres ca help. The T180's torque can be quite punishing on tyres.

Even with my ickle D4D Yaris, the Continental Premium 2E's lasted over 20,000 miles but the much softer Premium 5's lasted maybe 7,000!

Thanks chaps, the help is much appreciated. I too had wondered if they were retreads because of they seem to be layered as shown in the first picture. I will definitely be getting the front end checked over. It has a couple of other things needing changed too - check strap for the drivers door and a wheel bearing - so I might as well.

If I'm honest, I didn't know Extra Load tires existed, so any advice on this would be appreciated.

Just to clarify, the bridgestones on it are - 225/45R17 90W Bridgestone Potenzas. Steer Clear!!

Cheers

Bridgestone Potenza RE050A tyres in size 225/45/R17 91W were one of the original equipment tyre fitments on the first generation Auris.

A bit ofd topic but may I ask what is wrong with your drivers door check strap?

Mine was noisy creaky... I was always told that they were not to be lubricated but my local dealer sorted it with some spray white grease.

Yh I have the same issue with the door ... It almost sounds like it wasn't mounted straight

After some spray white grease all noises dissapeared and there was less resistance when opening closing the door

According to Toyotek in Lincoln (worth a look, toyota specialists) it is a common fault for the check strap to go wrong - not sure what its actual purpose is apart from the name being a clue, or how it can go wrong, but its a fairly cheap fix. Mine makes a knocking noise and doesn't close 'like a golf' for want of a better phrase.

Link to eBay for the part - probably find it cheaper somewhere.

The check strap stops the door opening out fully and stretching the hinges, it also makes the door "stop" half open, if you removed it the door would be damaged by opening out too far

Since there is a few of us with/had the door problem, what price can you offer the check strap for Parts-King?

As I said earlier try some spray white grease - stops the creaks and groans.

Do not use wd40 or silicon spray these will make the noises worse!

Moly grease works well too; Good thing is it turns into a lubricating powder when it starts to dry out so it doesn't lose its lubricating ability if the grease dries out.

XL tyres are actually meant for vans - They have stronger sidewalls and don't bulge/flex out so much under load, but they are also good for heavy diesel-engined cars!
