Problematic Operation Of Hazard Switch In Carina E

Hi guys,

in my all original made in japan, Carina E (320.000 kms and still counting......), I am facing the following problem: after switching on the hazard switch, flashing lights are flashing for a while, till the are stuck constantly on. Turning lights (left-right) are operating without any problem. The problem is only in the operation of the hazard lights.

I was suspecting the hazart switch itself, I ordered another used one from eBay. After repalcement though, the symptoms are exactly the same...........so the switch is not faulty

All fuses are ok as well.............

Any help would be appreciated

Thank you

Charis

That's an odd one, I haven't come across that before.

Unless the replacement switch was also faulty... It could be the flasher relay overheating and sticking. Maybe try removing it, cleaning the contacts and putting it back again...or try a new relay.

Thank you for the reply!

Two faulty switches? Is a part which is not known for similar weaknesses.....? I really do not think so....

The relay is the next thing to check. Do you know where this item is located in the dash?

Never had a Carina but my guess would be that you'd find the flasher relay bolted to the bodywork somewhere close to the steering column. That seemed to be a favourite place to put them. If you turn the indicators on you should be able to locate the area its in by the clicking noise.

Clean the switch with pure alcohol or a contact spray. After drying then reinstall it.Try to use a switch that is installed in a japan made carina. Try to avoid switches from e.u manifacturers.I have a uk built carina e.(1/1996).The Electric system has differences with the japan made model.

Actually it is the flasher relay which is made by Denso Japan. It is placed in an awkward place close to the fuse box above the clutch. In order to locate it, use the flash (e.g left) and try to find it from the noise (tik-tik) that it makes.

Thank you for your replies.

I have located the relay. As said by gnikas, it is in a awkward place and after several unsuccesful trials, I quited. Most likely, in a future visit in a Toyota specialist, I will have this job undertaken.

In case there are greek speaking members, we have discussed in details about the issue (location, function, removal, differences of japanese - european Carinas etc) in the Greek toyota forum http://toyotaclub.freeforums.org/carina-e-t149.html?sid=45f6aeffa9d823b7931cee7b42d78478
