go for a blitz , K & N, A'pexi or similar.

Do NOT get any filter that is oiled, as they can and will FUBAR the AFM on your car.

Get a stainless steel mesh or paper filter.

Is K&N not oiled?

What's an AFM??? Air/Fuel Mixture (Not used to all these abreviations)

I have an oiled JR filter on my non-SC 4AGE and it hasn't messed anything up, to my knowledge.

If it's the most expensive, it doesn't mean it's the best!!

AFM= Air flow meter which tells the ECU how much air is entering the engine so that the Air/fuel ratio is adjusted correctly. :bookworm:

If you can then get the Apexi induction kit, these have been selling for as little as £26 on eBay and they are the best for power increase and filtration.

Check this out: Filters test

Click on the pics of the filters to see the power and filtration results.

K and N are paper, (well all the ones i've seen are).

Basically the oil coats the AFM (Air Flow Meter) and this affects the ECU making it think there is a different ammount of air going into the engine

(the AFM is a hot wire which the air flow cools, the ecu sees the temp (current) and injects the correct ammount of fuel)

The oil insulates the wire from the airflow and the engine will gradually beging to run leaner and leaner which will eventually cause Det, which is BAD!

No K&N are cotton and use oil. http://www.knfilters.com/faq.htm#6 thats an FAQ question asking if their oil will damage the MAF sensor, obviously they claim it doesnt. But then again what do you expect?

I agree mate :) .Just don't want to fork money out on something that will be virtually worthless...or worse, kill the engine :( . I already have the Mongoose SSteel exhaust system as u may have noticed from my sig. and I think the combination with a good induction kit should improve the performance even more.I have noticed an increase in torque just after the Mongoose was fitted so I'm glad I chucked the standard exhaust

My K&N has been perfect ever since i fitted it back in the time that land forgot and i dont have any oil on my sensor and i clean and oil the filter regularly ?

seeing as the oil penetrates into the filter and you're supposed to let it sit for a while to do this there is little or no chance of the oil remaining on the surface and getting sucked over the sensor anyway ???

there's a perfectly good set of instructions with the filtercharge kit, and easy to follow, how do people mess it up ? or is this just word of mouth speculation from people without the filters or are these people pants at maintaining their cars ?

<_<

TO be honest, so far i've only heard the oil thing destroying your sensor from word of mouth, I havent actually seen any genuine write ups on this. From the K&N I posted above, they say it doesnt do any harm.... But I have seen a comparison review of all the main filters, and Apexi came out No.1 in terms of filtration capability.

It also depends what filter oil you use, some people use 3rd party stuff, couldnt this do harm to your sensor?

the whole point is "how did the AFM get coated in oil ?" the guy must have drenched his filter in oil and then fitted it wet and run the engine to achieve that, or he tried to oil the filter in place on the car without removing the AFM ??.....

no he oiled the filter off the car, let it dry and then fitted it to his car, i know because i was working on my car in his garage at the time.

Saying that his was a somewhat modified engine, he dropped in a 2.0 vaux engine, modified head, enlarged valves, kent 304/304 degree cams etc etc, spent most of its time at at 6000+ rpm, so was always drawing a hell of a lot of air in. uprated fuel injection etc etc

He really should have gone individual throttle bodies!
