Avensis 1998 Unlock Remote Key Fix - Taken From Forum

I noticed the remote was getting lazy when locking/unlocking the car, so decided to replace the batteries.

As a caution I did this at home with both set of keys available. The first key worked fine but the second key only locked the car, but did not unlock!

After confirming that the micro switch worked, I checked the forum and found this: -

Open the drivers door and insert the key and turn to ignition, but don't start the engine.

Wait 10 seconds then press the unlock button on the key twice (the key is still in the ignition position).

You will hear the doors make a unlocking sound twice after the key presses. There is a slight delay.

The key now should unlock the car remotely.

I could not find the original post again as I had cleared my history. I printed the instructions along with the much longer key programming version.

I have since found the original post and it was DONIE who posted the fix in replies:

As I said before the condition is the remote only locks the doors, but cannot open them and disable the alarm. It works with my year of car so should work with pre-vvti. After that it will be trial and error.

Once again the forum has come good!

I just looked into the owners manual for my car, and there is a section on "Resynchronised function" in Part 1, chapter 1-2 keys and doors, page 16.

It states if the lock and unlock buttons are pressed when out of range of the car or during the replacement of the batteries, unlocking operation does not operate. Then resynchronise the system by the following procedure. (The words are from the handbook and similar to what has been printed on the forum).

  1. Open the driver's door when the ignition key is not in the ignition switch.
  2. Insert the ignition key into the ignition switch, and turn it from "OFF" to "ON" and wait for 10 seconds.
  3. Push either the "LOCK" or "UNLOCK" switch on the wireless transmitter twice. At this time, operationing noise will be heard at the inside lock knob.

Not great English, but sufficient for the process. At least this is in the handbook and not the usual "take the car to your dealer"!

So if you have the handbook, check see if a procedure is covered. At least the forum may have a solution.
