Toyota Vsc Coming On With Trailer On? Any Ideas Dealers Dont Want To K

Hi

Ive got a 2012 Hilux Invincible and when ive got a trailer on the vsc like abs comes on interminantly and the steering locks up this then forces you to almost crash

I dont go fast in it and not towing over its limit with it

Has anyone any ideas??

Dealers dont want to know and say theres nothing wrong with it! i cant be the only one thats this is happening too!

Hi Dave, I would suspect either the nose weight of the trailer is too much, or there is a difference in the tyre tread depth across an axle - has a tyre been changed due to a puncture? I doubt the dealers will have a fault to find with their diagnostic equipment as the Hilux is probably doing what it is supposed to if it detects a difference in wheel speed. If the nose weight of the trailer is too great the front wheels will try to lift a little and tell the VSC that the front wheels are going slower than the back - the VSC thinks the truck is wheel spinning, and kicks in.

If there is a tyre tread depth difference across an axle the VSC will also see a difference in speed between the two wheels, again with the added nose weight of the trailer this could well bring the VSC on.

A bit of background on me, I have worked in the motor trade for 30 years, originally as a mechanic then Senior Lecturer for a German car manufacturer. I am now retired and live in Thailand for 8 months of the year with my wife and run a 2008 Hilux. All my experience with the problem you have would say a tyre issue so I would measure the tread depths first. Good luck, Mark

I should have added Dave that even the tyre pressures are critical - anything which makes the rolling radius of a wheel different to the others can cause VSC to activate.
