Turn Signal Indicators - Too Quiet!

I must be getting old (and deaf) but the output on the indicator turn signals is particularly poor. Searching the forums shows that I'm not alone.

Various solutions have been proposed including buzzers and piggyback mechanical relays. Not keen on the buzzer idea as I'd like to keep it stock sounding. Auxiliary relays would only 'click' on power-up unless someone could suggest one which would click 'both ways' if looped into the indicator curcuit?

One option which hasn't been suggested (that I know of) is rigging up a mini microphone next to the stock relay and routing the output to the car Speakers (or others) via a mini amplifier. All the components could be sourced for less than a tenner and fitting would be relatively simple.

The power to both units would be taken from the feed to the stock relay so they'd only be activated when signalling. Either that or twin feeds one from left/right indicator feeds - whichever is most accessible.

What do you think?

you can get little buzzers for motorbikes for obvious safety reasons as they don't self cancel.

apart from that look for your flasher unit and see if its getting muffled by a bit of foam soundproofing trim under the dash or something

All done.

Ditched the idea of the microphone. Kept it simple and fitted this relay which activates in parallel with the stock item.

Any relay would work actually - so long as it's mechanical and makes a noise.

The wiring was relatively simple taking feeds from the left and right door mirror indicators. Only two wires are used on the relay - Live(activator) and Ground. This image shows the door loom plug (disconnected) on the driver's side with the new feed spliced in (white/black) and the new ground wire (black/red).

The passenger side was the same sized plug in the footwell. A multi-meter quickly confirms the correct wire to use.

The relay module was attached to a bracket in the driver's footwell next to the diagnostic socket to ensure the sound originates from a similar location to the stock unit and for ease of access.

Note that the secondary relay does not actually activate the lights. The feed from the indicator lights merely switches the relay on/off. A couple of diodes from eBay (one per side) prevent the right lights flashing when indicating left and visa versa.

The total volume is at least double that of the original and sounds stock.

Really pleased.
