Hi All.

Does anyone know a good company who do Recon Gearboxes for my 2002 (52) 1.4 T3 VVT-I , ZZe12.

Local garage say the bearings are on their way out .

I have been quoted £998 for recon Box, New Clutch, Oil, Fitting and Vat.

Local Toyota centre quoted £1550 for the same.

Any info would be much appreciated.

Cheers all.

Trevorb33. Thought of that too but I am unemployed at the mo so gotta make every penny count.

She is a very reliable motor and still runs beautifully bar the noisey gearbox.

Garage said its one of them things that could last for months & months or go tomorrow, so just covering my options.

another point depending on mileage it may be wise to do clutch kit whilst box is out.

Avensisd4d786.

Been looking into the Breakers yard boxes but at mo nearest who has one is over 50 miles away and is £300 with 1 month warranty and 152k miles. I have only just hit 90k so dont want to fit one that's seen more hardships.

Local Garage just quoted £500 for reconditioned box with 12 month warranty and £80 for new clutch. Just negotiating with him about fitting rates but think he may get the job.

Thanks for the input though much appreciated.

You are too far from Welling, Kent, but they would have charged you less than £700 for a gearbox swap. Also some specialist would have replaced the bearings on your own gearbox. That's what I had done plus the final drive rebuilt too. My mechanic changed the clutch when replacing the gearbox.

Yes it cost more than my car is worth, but I found it easier than searching for another and not know it's history. Last year I looked at cars with my brother for his wife, that were up to 7 years younger than mine for sale. Average asking price £3000+ and I found faults on each and everyone of them that would cost nearly as much to rectify. These were mainly from dealerships. I know you can get cheaper with private, and we found a peach condition Micra.

The time and effort was great.

Yes I would keep and repair the gearbox if the car is in overall great condition and you know it is will serve you for some time after.

Cheers for the input.

Have found a local engine & gearbox reconditioning firm so have sent them a quote request for both recon and repair.

Will update site with news as and when
