Where Is Temp Gaug On Coroll Verso?

My mate has a 2.2 Corolla Verso (2004 I believe it is), and he told me today that there is no temp gauge on his car. I thought this does not seem right . He said there is only a blue light that goes out after driving it a while, assuming that it goes out when the engine is up to temp. He said, "how would I know if it over heats"?

Is he correct, or is he not looking in the right place.

No temp gauge, should the temperature raise too high ( well before it gets hot enough to cause damage ) the same blue light would illuminate bright red.
