Another forced regen

Hi everyone. Advice please.

My T180 has just had third forced regen at dealer after all warning lights/loss of power etc. Seems to happen every couple of months.

Had new EGV in December. Now told only solution is new DPF cost £2200. Local Indy garage quotes £1200 with non Toyota part.

I know I shouldn't have bought diesel as do mostly short journeys but hindsight etc. But do 100 mile trip every weekend and try to keep speed and revs up.

Should I pay up or get rid?

You don't say what mileage your car has done or what its general condition is but ultimately the choice will be yours. If you do decide to buy a new DPF don't waste your money on anything but the genuine article. Parts King on here can probably give you a good quote but you'd still be better getting it fitted at a Toyota garage so they can reset the ECU to recognise the new DPF.

Thanks for the reply. Car is in vgc generally and has done 75k miles. Trade in value only about £5.5K.

Car the ECU be reset by non Toyota garages? Another quote I have had, using Toyota part,  is £400 cheaper than my main dealership.

Based on what you have said, it will happen again.  It's happened to me once, hopefully never again.

It's your choice, but I would cut my losses and sell it, if you driving style is not going to change.

The forced regen history will be on the Toyota service history database and if the future owner is like me, I have always asked Toyota and Lexus to see the cars history before buying.

So it may put some people off.

Have you given Ian a ring at Roys motor company in Norwich? Excellent Indy Toyota dealer he may be able to advise or help !

A neighbor says he had his dpf treated by cutting a hole in it, taking out the interior then rewelding the hole. Remapping then no more dpf probs and no prob with MOT. All for £600. Can this work? Anyone else tried it?

I'll answer your previous post first, where you asked if it has to be a Toyota dealer to reset the ECU for the new DPF. I believe the answer is yes, I think it was Devon Aygo who said on here it has to be done by using the Toyota software.

Re cutting holes in the DPF, it sounds attractive doesn't it but you could be storing up trouble for yourself. At some point in the future you may have to change a component say an SCV and find there are only modified parts available which require a Toyota software update for the ECU which would wipe out the hole cutters programme.

The other aspect is you would be turning your car into a NOX poisoning chariot and polluting the atmosphere.

afaik you used to have to fit an emulator to trick the ECU into thinking that the DPF was still there - but that may have changed now that it seems that Denso's encryption has been cracked.

It is now an instant MOT fail if they discover that the DPF has been removed from a vehicle that was originally fitted with one & it is an offence to drive it in that state.

I presume that a particulates test in the MOT is likely to show that there is not one.

I would never ever entertain the possibilty of any dealer fixing my car - also a T180 - unless I was very certain of what the problem was beforehand. 

I would therefore go to a decent and honest independent, and ascertain for certain what the problem is. It may be that the DPF injector is at fault rather than the DPF itself.

If it can be established that it is definitely DPF related, then I would conduct a further regen/clean of the DPF at the independent - not at the dealer - and see what happens thereafter. One possibilty is that the dealer's regen/cleaning operation is perhaps not as thorough as it ought to be....for obvious reasons.  

Only when you can be sure that the DPF is truly goosed would I then consider replacing it 

Clearly the dealer quote for this seems ******, so use the independent with the genuine part - and do shop around further for the latter.

Roys Motor Company Norwich would be my choice for sure, have used them for over 30 years, never let me down.

Thanks guys. How do you know if it's a decent indy garage? Am in Suffolk. Was told non Toyota places can't access ECU?

Will print out advice re dpf injector and shop around. Disguised as a bloke.

Decent garage comes about by word of mouth usually, but for sure it does help if you have some knowledge and thus can detect BS when you smell it. For sure there are some half decent dealers, but in general, I have found their prices ludicrous, and their simplistic reliance on diagnostics too restricting. Not sure about the ECU, but speaking with an indepedent armed with your previous knowledge should confirm which way to go.

I freely admit that on the face of it, it does look a bit grim, but there may be options the independant can offer rather than automatically default to the most costly solution. Disguising yourself as a bloke would be unnecessary.

I take my Lexus and my MR2 and Rav to Roys motor company in Norwich, you can trust them 100% have used them for over 30 years and have never had an issue , they will tell you exactly how it is no BS and won,t rip you off !! Not sure how far from Norwich you are as I,m in Lowestoft and take mine the 20 odd miles to Norwich , why not give Ian a call and just ask his advice over phone ?

Hi. Spoke to Ian as you suggested and he said best option might be removal and clean by a company they use about £600. He said don't bother with replacement as too extreme so I have to drive more assertively. Very helpful guy. Would use if not so far away.

Found local diesel engineers who have done diagnostics and complete system decoke. He says dpf was only partially blocked and thinks it is all now clear. Have to get on A14 more often and drive like a hooligan!

If all happens again will have to rethink. Nice little petrol Vitara??

Forgot to add, Ian suggested I get some Forte diesel treatment and diesel turbo cleaner which I have done. Fingers crossed.
