2008 2.0 D4D - Avensis Cutting out

So just this morning my avensis cut out for no reason.... no lights were active on the dashboard... it just stalled as i turned in the gate for work so i was driving quite slow. Quite scary losing power steering like that without any warning.

 

Heres some details on the car:

2008 Avensis 2.0 D4D

180K miles on the clock.

2K off its next service.

New 3/4 engine block fitted at 112k (approx. 4 years ago)

Just one front wheel bearing replace never anything else needed.

 

I always do the full service myself every 10k... previously i always used genuine toyota parts however last time i used after marked parts - i..e Blue Print parts

 

On the last service i used the following Blue Print parts:

* Oil Filter

* Fuel Filter

* Air Filter

* Non Branded engine Oil 

Also gave the egr valve a good clean. 

It may not be related to the last service.... also its been quite warm here yesterday car was reading 32 degrees Celsius. I know the car has high mileage so just wondering what it could be.

No it started right up again no problem.... these mornings its quite warm so its starting no problem.

 

However when it was colder a few months ago it was a little harder to start... but once i cleaned the egr valve it seemed to improve

Suction control valves -clogged fuel filter -lazy starter motor.my d4d was getting hard to start checked the fuel filter and it was full of slime.put new 1 on and started sweet and refurb of the starter motor.

Just an update on this drove the car for about 80 miles after the initial issue about.... everything appears to be normal however the VSC light came on but once i stopped and started the car again later it went out....

 

any idea what i should do? I guess a trip to Mr T is in order maybe they can check if it registered a fault code?

There's two things I would suggest (1) Change the Blue Point fuel filter for a genuine Toyota one, seen a number of posts on here over the years with ppl saying use the genuine filter.

Second thing is try disconnecting the fuel temp sensor (NOT the coolant temp sensor). It's located on the injection pump. Again, seen reports of strange things happening with them. Worth a check to see. I've attached a pic showing location, might not be your exact pump (it's the single SCV pump and you might have 2).

So brief update on this issue....

 

Changed the fuel filter on saturday..... went on a long motorway drive 85K miles each way.... all was fine no loss in power.... as soon as i entered the city ... slowing down to meet the first set of lights it stalls again. It started up right away again... did it three more times driving slowly around the city... at one point the engine was losing power and running rough but then it came right again in a few seconds.

So took the car to an injector pump repair specialist... explained the situation to them.... they said it doesnt sound like an injector issue. He wanted to replace the SCV on the pump gave me a price of 160 euro... so i decided to drive it some more and see what happens.... hasnt stalled in over 3 days now doing 60 miles each day.

If it reappears ill replace the SCV myself getting the part from MR T.... anyone know how much this part may be?

Definately the EGR Valve is clogged up.

Did you get this sorted out ? My car 2007 D4D behaving similar, uneven idle and cutting out at lights sometimes. Restarts fine, starts fine in the morning. New fuel filter fitted made no difference. Ran 2 tankfuls of super diesel with a bottle of redex in each time and it seemed to settle down but now it's back on regular diesel it started happening again.

Hello,

I am new to this forum, and asking for help! We are having the same problem with our Toyota Avensis Estate 57. Tests and diagnostics have been run, the fuel filter has been changed, all to no avail. It runs well usually, and then out of nowhere, the car momentarily loses power and all the dashboard lights up. Three times the car has stalled altogether.

After the last tests, we have been advised to write it off. We don't want to do this, it is our only car and we are not rolling in cash to step out to buy another. Moreover, we love the car, it is a total workhorse, and is still going strong save for this problem. 

Any advice would be greatly appreciated. In fact, bottle of Laphroaig to the man who can provide a solution!

As a start, I would first check at the Battery. Are the terminals clean, the Battery clean and the terminals tightened down properly? The main cables from the Battery should not be loose, corroded or broken. This one sounds like you could be losing power or signals to or from the engine ECU, or it is somehow resetting itself.

Ignition barrel or relay...

Try wiggling key when engine running and stationary as a start

I had a good one ( bad one) years ago.

It turned out a malicious prank that could have been very dangerous.

Some ex employee ****** put a piece of cling film down the filler neck of his old van ..I inherited said van and it could run ok for days then random power loss and cut out very dangerous on motorway etc..crank to no avail but if left for 5 mins or so it would start and run again for another random period...

So obviously depending on fuel level / g forces and other factors the cling film would find its way to the suction stand pipe and starve fuel supply . Then when left the vacuum on standpipe would subside and cling film would drop away from pipe.

 

The garage had head off injectors and pump refurbished etc in and out until this was found weeks later

Check the alternator, Battery terminals.

Any earth points too if the ecu is visible make sure its fully connected and tight
