D4d starting problems update

Hi, thought I would update on my starting issues.. 2.0d4d 1ad-ftv engine, first start of the day takes a couple of attempts with diesel smoke for a few seconds then fine, no other running issues, so far I have cleaned the egr and manifold pretty clogged and now fine, changed the fuel filter, removed the suction valve and cleaned with wd40 still no change but if it's knackered I guess cleaning wouldn't make any difference, checked for codes and only map sensor came up but could be old stored code so cleared this, checked the maf looks very clean, at a loss now, still can't see how it would be glow plugs as most common rail engines don't need them unless it's really cold out. It only happens first start of the day after that it starts fine, guess next is injectors?

Does the starter sound OK when cranking?battery OK? Also could be a leaky injector causing smoke on start up.try some good pro injector cleaner and purge it thru rather than put it in the tank..I'm also meaning to do that on mine.

How do you purge it through? I've done it on vw and audi's by filling a fresh fuel filter as as they are usually a cartridge filter, do I take the fuel hose off the filter housing end to the pump and place it in a container full of diesel injector cleaner? Or just add the injector cleaner to the tank when it's low? Cheers

I believe it's to be done with the hoses off and put into a clear bottle or jar then put cleaner into it.apparently thru the filter dilutes it.I need to do my own when I get time and when the weather holds up at the weekends.

I had a similar problem like that a few years ago with poor starting when cold (around 1-2°C sort of temperature) turned out to be the fuel shut off valve (side of the diesel pump and end of head) which has an upgrade due to the original spring internally not being strong enough, new has either strong spring or double spring to stop this problem. I bought the new valve from a Diesel Specialist (came in a genuine Toyota box with gaskets and spacers) for a fraction of the price dealers charge. If I can find the receipt I'll upload a picture.

Maybe not be your problem but could be worth looking at.

I had a very similar problem with my 2008 2.0 D4D avensis (240k miles on the clock), for years it got it very hard to start once the temperature dropped below 10 degrees.

Had the diesel tank cleaned and flushed but still same problem got to a point where it took 10+ attempts to get it to start on a autumn/winters morning.

I changed the fuel filter for a Landcruiser fuel filter, it has one extra hole allowing better diesel flow, and I've never had a problem since.

I had similar issues on an 08 2.2 D4D 185k. It had always started on the button but all of a sudden it wouldn't start. Kept firing but wouldn't run. A suction control valve (SCV) and a set of glow plugs from eBay (50 quid all in) had it starting again - injectors are still knackered though!

Hi,

There's an informative video on YouTube explaining a diesel purge and found benifits on a Toyota land cruiser. Perhaps worth a look if you haven't performed the purge yet. ExploringOz.

hope this helps?
