On a D4D (1CD-FTV), what is the "bit" circled in red on the attached picture ?

Was just wondering what it is :)

Don't know for sure but it might be a reservoir for the brake servo vacuum system. Is there a hose goes from it to the brake servo?

Its a Vacuum resevoir for the brake servo

yes opposite of an accumulator for a pressurised system

 

this on a vacuum system may give you a couple of servo assisted brake pedal pumps should your engine cut out whilst vehicle is in motion
