Auto gearbox - help!

My 2001 Colorado which I have owned for 8 years has recently started whining from the gearbox. It's auto and is quiet in park and neutral. Put it in drive and it whines along with the engine speed. Hold it on the brakes and it whines, so can't be the transfer box or drive train. I have has a Toyota special listen to it on a ramp and they say its coming from the box. I have had the oil and filter changed but still the same. My question is do I live with it and will it go bang? Get it repaired, I suspect a torque converter or pump, or buy a box from fleabay? Cars too good to scrap but 2k for a box is more than it's worth!
