2010 2.0D-4D Timing Chain or Belt?

I'm looking to buy a 2.0 diesel D-4D engined Avensis registered September 2010. Calls to three different main dealers have resulted in 2 for chain and 1 for belt to be replaced at 60,000 miles or 5 years. So which is it? Thanks for your help.

Who ever answered belt at the dealer should know better and not answer at all. The moment you said you had a 2010 diesel, I knew it would be chain. So long it was not one of the mechanics that answered, then I would not be as worried. Just regular oil changes to keep the internal protected.

I cannot answer your DPF question, but a search of the forum may help.

if your car reg starts with 60, it will have dpf. If it starts with 10 then no DPF.

It's September 2010 and starts 60. So that's definitely with a DPF then is it?

Yes you have DPF.

it will depend upon when the car/engine was produced - it is possible that it could have been a car that was in stock for some time before being registered.

Standard DPF was introduced to the Avensis 2.0 1AD-FTV for UK in June 2010.

So, if it was manufactured before June 2010 it is unlikely to have a DPF. Yes?

Unfortunately the owner doesn't know whether it has one or not (he bought it new & took delivery in September 2010) so he's going to take it into the dealership and ask them. I think this is the only way to know for sure.

Thanks for your help on this.

That's my understanding. If you get the VIN number perhaps Devon Aygo or PartsKing could check Toyota's database for you.

Possibly there is a really easy way to tell just by looking at the exhaust but I don't know it - again, they might.

If it has a DPF you can see it by removing the engine cover and looking down the back of the engine. A bulbous tin affair.
