Auris 1.4 D4D purchase

I am looking to buy a used 1.4 D4D Auris and I need some advice.

At the moment I have a 1.4 D4D Yaris 2003 and I am extremely happy with it thus I would like to get an Auris (used - around 50-70k miles on the clock) which is a bit bigger and newer as my yaris is getting old now.

So far from my research, I believe the best option in terms of reliability, age performance and economy, is an early 2010 Auris (Non-DPF), 1.4 D4D engine, 6 speed manual gearbox with around 60-70k miles on the clock.

Few questions and it will be much appreciated if you can advice me please:

  1. Am I right assuming that the Non-DPF Auris models are better in terms of reliability? People seem to have issues with them due to town driving and are expensive to replace clean etc.
  2. From what i found online up to the early 2010 Aurises has no DPF, how can i tell from pictures if an auris has a DPF or not? Will I be able to tell by REG plate?
  3. 5 speed manual vs 6 speed manual? Any real difference, any reliability issues with either gearboxes? How can i tell from pictures if the car is the 5 or 6 speed version?
  4. Is the 1.4 D4D engine big enough for the size of the car or will the engine struggle?
  5. Any known issues that I should be made aware of before I start looking on cars?

I have a 59 plate pre facelift auris 1.4 d4d I've owned it for nearly 3 years and it's started first time everytime and haven't up to now had any problems with it. I mainly do short trips in it around town and the occasional 15 mins down the motorway and it's showing 40 mpg for this time of year which I don't think is bad the only thing I would say to do is to make sure any recall work has been carried out

I amabot surpriced with the 40mpg, my yaris does around 70ish. I can stretch it to 80+. I am curious to what auris can do if driver carefully.

That's very good advice to ensure that all recall works has been carried out. If it hasn't it is something that toyota will happilly sort free of charge or are recalls have end date etc?

Larger, heavier car. Short trips around town will take its toll.

As regards recalls and voluntary customer service campaigns, these aren't time limited, the specified work is free, and one can use Toyota's recall checker to determine whether the car has any outstanding work due. The recall checker won't inform one of individual recalls, etc.

One can also use the Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency's recall checker - https://www.dft.gov.uk/vosa/apps/recalls/default.asp?tx=

Just bought one myself  3 Door 1.4 d4d 2008. I also avoided later models as have seen too much hassle with DPF's causing big loss in MPG overall, plus reliability issues. Don't know how to ID one with DPF versus without.

I think the gear ratios are exactly the same with the extra 6th gear for cruising at motorway speeds. Which lowers revs a bit at top end but otherwise you wouldn't notice.  Tell the difference by gearshift with reverse opposite 5th on older model and with 6th speed reverse is opposite 1st to the left RHD.

MPG wise i'm hoping for 60ish but haven't used first fill yet to calculate.

Issue wise check clucth and gearbox operation and squealing brakes.

Nice car to drive, comfortable find it has plenty of power for normal driving and car overtake it you know turbo range. Best of luck with search.

Depending on your budget, have you thought about a Auris HSD hybrid. Nicer to drive than a diesel and cheaper to run...£0 road tax, 50mpg day to day around town and 60-65mpg on the motorway....the best I`ve had is 72mpg on a long run.

Perfect i used both websites and there is no outstanding work to be done. I will check with the dealer when i decide to take things seriously with a car.

Yeah this is what i am thinking, 6th gear for lower revs. I don't see the reason adding an extra gear and keeping the same ratio. I will look into it because if that's the case 5 or 6 speed wont make any difference to me as i am mainly driving on motorways.

My budget is around 4k+ and i wont consider a hybrid at the moment. More things to go wrong, i am not really fan of hybrids in their current form/design at the moment. I mainly drive on motorways so a hybrid wont be any good to me.

You`ll need about 6k for a auris hybrid at least.

But don`t think a hybrid is a reliability risk or are poor on the motorway....nothing could be further from the truth.

Does anybody knows the easier way to tell weather an auris has a DPF or not just looking from the pictures? I just don't want to start travelling across the country to find a DPF model auris. I also don't expect the seller to know this detail so it will be better for me to identify whether it has a DPF just by looking on photos, if is possible.

You can assume all 1.4 d4d's 5 speeds have No DPF, Think they came in after facelift version 2010 which all have 6 speed box. Could be listed on registration(log) book but someone with later model could check this for you?

thanks for your reply franse21.

This is where it becomes a bit tricky because I am looking for the 6 speed gearbox model without the DPF. I don't how many there are out there but there are definitely some auris with the 6 speed manual gearbox that doesn't have DPF.

I was thinking if there is a rough way of finding out by the registration number, not sure if toyota will share this information if i pop in with 3-4 reg numbers and ask them.

I have a facelift Auris d4d 6 speed with no dpf. It was registered 31st May 2010.  Think you might be able to tell by checking on tax cost .Mine is £110 a year and I think the DPF one could be £30 but please confirm with dealer .

Car drives ok it is not as fast as my Yaris diesel but this is because it is heavier . All in all a good car !

I missed out on a 2009 1.4 d4d that had a 6 speed box, so there's a range of 12 months at least( mid '09-mid'10) as i think towards the end of 2010 they started to fit DPF's on them. As steve says tax disc bracket is the way to go. Seen one on Autotrader UK 2 weeks ago with what your looking for. Good hunting!

By the sounds of it, Autotrader is not the best place to get an accurate tax disc price for each car. All the auris on there have £110 tax, even later 1.4 d4d ones, 2011-2016.

Can anyone suggest an accurate way to get the correct tax price for car on autotrader?

I have been looking to find the right car and I am still a bit confused. For a car to have £30 tax cost its emissions has to be between 111 - 120 g/km.

Well, it makes sense the DPF model to have lower emissions however every single 1.4 D4D auris I looked at, has £110 tax cost (some with 125 g/km and some with 128 g/km). This includes many aurises 1.4 D4D from 2009 to 2012. How can a 2011 auris have 120+ emissions whilst fitted with a DPF? I am getting the emission numbers of the government website for tax checking.

Toyota main dealer is just useless for any information. I asked the question and straight away their response was that it is illegal to drive a car in uk if a DPF is not fitted. They also said that all D4D engines since 2002 are fitted with a DPF (my 2003 yaris was parked next to them and it has no DPF). At that point i realised that is not worth talking to them anymore. :s

Any other way finding out whether it has a DPF fitted or not? I am looking for a facelift 2009-2010 6 speed, non DPF auris.

Any help will be much appreciated

Thanks for the information. Yes now it makes a bit more sense. What I don't understand is why the DPF model has higher emissions (128 g/km)? I thought that was the reason Toyota introduced the DPF.

DPF doesn't lower the co2 -emissions, but burning the soot in the filter consums diesel, so emissions will be higher.

The difference is that the 1.4D4D emitting 125g/km is a Euro 4 spec, and the later 1.4D4D emitting 128g/km is a Euro 5 spec.

Hi, does anyone know if this was definitive?

I also have a May-2010 1.4 D4D Auris with 6sp. I've called two Toyota dealers each of which has given conflicting advice!

I've never felt a regen taking place but also don't recall leaving behind a big cloud of black soot - despite giving it a regular boot.

Mine has now covered 80k, so wondering if it's now the time to consider a switch...

Sometimes the easiest way is just to look under the car. I don't know how exposed the DPF is on a 1.4 Auris, but usually with a DPF you can see a canister in the exhaust with pressure sensor connections in the pipework before it and after it.

Also replacement DPFs can be bought for about £350-£400 now. Still a chunk of money, but not the horrendous expense it once was, and less than a set of new tyres on many cars. They can sometimes be cleaned to get more life out of them too. Personally I wouldn't get rid of a car I was otherwise happy with just because it may need a new DPF in the future.

Does any1 have any idea if toyota auris 1.4d reg 15 comes under ulez or not.

The ULEZ standards are:

Euro 3 for motorcycles, mopeds, motorised tricycles and quadricycles (L category)
Euro 4 (NOx) for petrol cars, vans, minibuses and other specialist vehicles
Euro 6 (NOx and PM) for diesel cars, vans and minibuses and other specialist vehicles

The Audi was facelifts in March 2015. Pre-facelift Auris 1.4D4D was Euro 5 and post facelift Euro 6.

So it depends whether you're is pre or post facelift as to whether it may be eligible under th ULEZ.

Why not use the online ULEZ checker......

You can check on their site. Here type your number plate and you will see.
I believe 1.4 d aren’t exempt and you likely to pay ulez. But check yourself to be sure.
