D4D engine pinking not pulling

I recently had an issue with my landcruiser engine.  Engine pinking in acceleration, not pulling as it should, black smoke on pick up etc ....no faultcodes generated - i   took to two well reputed garages to get sorted. First garage wanted to fit a new turbo which i refused to have done   Second garage insisted it was fuel related. They began at injectors at a cost of £560 to have rebuilt, absolutely no difference, then moved to fuel pump £ 50 to get checked again no difference then to fuel filter housing and fuel primer replaced with genuine part at cost of £110 plus £888.00 labour . They told me jeep was fixed - i paid up and she was no better off ... took car home and removed air filter - away she went bout 80% better .   I replaced air filter with new one back to square one ... when air filter was removed she was better .  So i removed air box and intake pipe from inside the wing... there is a heavy  guage nylon / fabric sock which was very dirty . I removed this soaked in petrol and washed it.   It became very pliable so i inserted a two inch pipe inside the sock to prevent it from " sucking in". I reassembled everything and the landcruiser was back to normal the problem was caused by starvation of air ... a very simple fix which involved some thought instead of these " fit the part and eliminate mechanics ".  I just hope this post will save someone a £1500 bill .
