Hello Everyone,

I am back again asking for help and advice from the community. I now have a nice little 2008 Aygo which I bought second hand in July 2015, but I have noticed the electrical connector on the rear windscreen is slowly detaching itself from the glass. Is this going to be an expensive specialist repair? I have a tried to attach two photographs which illustrate the problem.

Any comments would be welcome.

Kind regards,

Bob Sutton.

Hi Bob,

Years ago, I had the same problem on a car and I fixed it myself with some "Chemical Metal".

https://www.amazon.co.uk/PLASTIC-PADDING-CHEMICAL-METAL-FILLER/dp/B004PIFZXA/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1490180123&sr=8-1&keywords=chemical+metal

You just apply it with an old knife to the window and the contact and press the contact onto the glass. It sticks like the proverbial and retains a good electrical contact.

After I had fixed it,  the contact stayed in place for as long as I kept the car and the heated rear window worked perfectly.

The stuff comes in various sizes, some you have to mix with a hardener and some is ready to apply but it does have loads of other uses and I'm sure that it will sort your problem out for little money.

I hope that helps, good luck!

Hello Everyone and particularly Neil (aka Agent Orange).

Just an update to my post dated 22nd March 2017. I finally had a little time to try and repair the electrical connector which was detaching itself from the glass. It might not be pretty but saved me a shed-load.

Thanks Neil for the Plastic Padding tip.

Kind regards,

Bob Sutton.

Many thanks, Bob.

I am so glad that it worked for you and to be fair, I think that you have made a pretty neat job of it as it's not the easiest of things to work with, is it?

Like I sid in my previous post, that repair should last for years....Well done Sir!

I used a tiny drop of super glue. Works fine.

Thanks for that im guessing no issues with it working properly using normal glue then.

Shouldn't think so. Just make sure some metal to metal contact is maintained.

I had a similar issue with my wife's Aygo (2009 MK1), purchased s/hand, where the offside rear window defroster tab was missing.

After a bit of measuring and investigation I purchased for the following from a US company Frost Fighter:

  • 2315-HCB Uni-Clip Defroster Tab
  • 2000 Frost Fighter Rear Defroster Tab Bonding Kit

https://frostfighter.com/product/product-212

https://frostfighter.com/defroster-repair-tab-bonding-kit-2000.htm

I used a small portable heater to hasten the curing process for the glue - as mentioned in the instructions. I did this repair about 9 months ago and the tab has not separated and the the rear window defroster works perfectly.

I would imagine the metal connector would be a relatively simple job with a 3D printer, but sadly I did not have access to such technology. The glue however is a special electrically conductive silver based expoxy and costs a small fortune ☹️. That having been said, superglue was mentioned as a possibility earlier in the thread - your mileage may vary.
