Can anybody explain what this cream sealant is?

Just bought a 2009 Auris, can anybody explain what this sealant in the boot is for?

I would say rustproofing over welded seams. It looks a bit rough but then I did a search for 'Auris spare wheel well' and found similar images.

The tape stuff will be sound deadening - I've often seen it in the wheel well on other cars. Whatever it was that they used to apply the sealant, it didn't come from B&Q in that width  - looks like a factory fit, or maybe it was a dealer trying to seal a water leak for a customer? Still, as long as it isn't leaking and looks generally sound, I wouldn't worry about it.

Both my 2009 and 2012 Auris had similar sealant from new - though a bit tidier in application.
