Removal of panel under gear knob (CVT)

Does anyone know how to remove the panel that surrounds the gear knob (underneath it).

One of the kids dropped a shopping trolley pound on the black plastic bit that the gear knob goes through, and it's slipped down the gap at the bottom (between the panel and the flexible black plastic) :-(

Image of what the CVT gear know looks like is below.  I'm looking to remove the silver panel to get underneath the flexible black plastic it if that makes sense.

Does anyone know how exposed everything under the panel is? e.g. is the coin likely to cause a problem if left.

Even though my car is manual the procedure is the same.

I installed a USB socket in the centre console storage, so had to remove the gear lever cover.

First remove the lower side panels, observing how they are located when replacing them. P1070915.thumb.JPG.00fe6c43a870546f53af3de9d8f51e31.JPGP1070916.thumb.JPG.e0122226e7271c833673d828ac377c3f.JPG

If think you may also need to remove the upper panels.

Then remove the dark trim by lifting  P1070917.thumb.JPG.db571fcdc21a00654650e0709b4d3ce6.JPGP1070919.thumb.JPG.b2bd321fc758f2667d79424f5c9c9410.JPG

Now lift and and pull the gear shift cover. Manual gear lever needs to remove the gator surround.P1070918.thumb.JPG.1a0bd85cfd94130dcd4165c57d53f1e3.JPGP1070921.thumb.JPG.6e7ba949a025000c642f105ed5f328d5.JPG

Note the photos showing the upper side panels removedP1070925.thumb.JPG.d50e3955340b2abac2f94beaf7c47824.JPG

You then have access

It has been over two years since I stripped the console to install the kit and it was not too difficult.

That's really, really helpful.  Thank you!

Is it just the orange tools you need to remove the lower side panels?

I suspect they're to prise things open without damaging them, but what are they called (I'll need to get some)

Those are trim removal tools which are made of a strong plastic, designed not to scratch or mark the trim. I got off eBay or Amazon.

I have a metal trim tool too.

Well cheers for that, the job is done (and only one piece leftover too )

I managed to borrow the exact same trim removal kit from a colleague at work

For anyone else attempting this, the following video might help as an additional reference too:
