2001 Fuel Reserve

Hi guys, had a search on the forum for this topic and have found some posts touching on this but was wondering if I can get a definitive answer.

I have a 2001 vvti gs and I believe the fuel tank is 50 litre capacity. I've only had the car a couple of months and realised that the fuel light comes on earlier than I would have expected. It made me wonder if I was getting poor MPG but when I then fill up it takes around forty litres.

So my question is, why does the fuel light come on so early in the model corolla? If it's got ten litres of fuel left in it, then I could in theory drive another hundred miles or so with the light on. I thought the reserve in most cars was around a gallon, 4.5 litres, enough to get you about forty miles before conking out.

I'm tempted to try and do another seventy miles or so with the light on just so I know for future how much further I can go with the light on. Might have a filled up fuel can in the boot on standby just in case though!

Cheers for any advice/info.

In most Toyotas the low fuel light is designed to come on before the actual reserve is reached - which provides the driver with plenty of warning that fuel is running low.

What Frosty says, mine comes on in my T-Sport pretty early, I've just got used to it. I've touched 50 miles on the light but mine has a different tank to the original, so it might be bigger

Edit: Should have said, I touched 50 before I bottled it and filled the tank lol

You will get about 50 miles out of it when the light comes on.

But if you drive around corners for long enough it'll turn the light off ;)
