Intermittent fault

Hi guys really need suggestions on a intermittent fault with my 2001 RAV4 VX.

A couple of years ago had transmission problem with the automatic gear box, ECU was fault and fixed.

Now the fault is speedo doesn't work and surges from time to time.. went to transmission garage who checked fault code, (speedo sensor) had new sensor, drove fine for 24 hours EML came back on same fault code and same symptoms for about 30 mins, then drives perfectly. Back to garage who send ECU back for check, comes back fine.

EML goes off drives fine for a couple of days then same again!!.. goes back could be a wiring fault where water has gotten in module, this is fixed as garage said water was there.

Drives ok for 24 hours then speedo stops working again surges a little EML comes back on speedo sensor fault (has new sensor fitted).

Any ideas what's the fix?.. it drives fine but like playing Russian roulette all of a sudden speedo doesn't work and surges.

regards Carl.

There are a few posts about this but water ingress to the RHF footwell ( remove trim in footwell to the right of the throttle pedal ) there is a large multi wire plug actually bolted together, the connector is the feed for all the wires coming from the engine bay to the dash. Check this plug for water damage as water/corrosion in here causes all sorts of weird issues with the dash electrics
