Gen 4 Dashboard Removal

Has anyone removed the dashboard from a Gen 4 Prius?  I'm trying to run a lead from the centre air vent to the fusebox in the passenger footwell.

Beat Sonic has posted a video on YouTube for a LHD (see below).  The dash removal starts at 2:15 and at the 2:36 stage they talk about removing a clip.  For the life of me, I can see any such clip on my RHD Prius.

TIA.

Sorry for 'bumping' this post but, just on the off-chance, has anyone figured out howto detach the dashboard in a Gen 4 yet?

Be aware that bumping is against the terms and conditions of TOC.

Perhaps an admin could delete it for me.

That clip is one of the pop out centre type, like this advert

https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/100x-Car-Plastic-Clips-Rivet-Set-Push-Fit-Door-Boot-Trim-Panels-Bumper-Fastener/132844038721?epid=9025497155&hash=item1eee1f2a41:g:pbIAAOSwwXRb2tCT:rk:25:pf:0

Pull up the centre and ease out. They are the same as secure the black plastic on top of  the radiator.

That is assuming we have that clip at all. I'll have a look in mine tomorrow as I need to remove the vents to get power to my dash cam.

And don't try putting your lead round the air bag cover like he did, may end up very nasty.

I had another look for the clip, but still couldn't find it.  Hopefully, you'll have better eyes than me!

See what I can do. Knowing the basics helps rather than tugging away and breaking something.

Yes your right no clip, no need to go to Specsavers!

But I did find this screw which looks like it is holding the detachable front to the main dash. The red clips are the detachable front part. Easing on the dash I could see the clips moving and it looks like the front is held by the screw, how you get to it God knows. I could not fathom it out.PB060392.thumb.JPG.b4067ce7c85e60413c9a24fd986b4131.JPGPB060392.thumb.JPG.b4067ce7c85e60413c9a24fd986b4131.JPG

You got a stage further than I did - I didn't notice the screw.  I'll take another look when the weather's good enough, although if you can't figure it out I'm pretty sure I won't either!

It's surprising that nobody else seems to have removed the dash yet.  My forlorn hope is that Haynes will, one day, produce a manual for a Gen 4 Prius.

Haynes manuals are a waste of money these days, I bought one for SWMBO's Gen 2, anything technical and it says refer to the dealers.

Richard. I found this on the Prius Chat forum shows removing the top of dash. Might be an alternative option. About 4 hours work though. Might have to join if your not a member. CoolPrius posted a guide trying to sort buzzing rattles out. Might be able to just lift the top easily to get a wire in though.

That's really interesting, thanks Phil. I'll take a look at it this later today and report back.

I took another look at my dashboard with a view to taking off the top of the dash but chickened out.  I'm too afraid of a) breaking something and b) not being able to put everything back together again!

Have to see an ICE specialist. They know intimate details of most makes. My mate had his dash cam feed fed though the headlining to the rear view mirror.

Are you feeding power to a dash cam?

I have a hardwired dash cam and a phone mount on the centre air vent.

The dash cam wiring was quite easy.  I just fed a wire up the passenger side column (making sure it didn't interfere with the airbag) using a Nextbase hardwire kit from the fusebox under the glovebox.

It's the wire to the centre air vent I'm struggling with.  I've manged to feed a wire under the dash and emerging by the steering column.  It works, but isn't very neat.  Probably not worth spending a fistful of cash to have it done professionally.

Can you not mount the dash cam by the side of the rearview mirror and use the power for the phone. Power is easy to pick up either from the rear view mirror feed, if its the electronic version, or off the dome lights.

Phil: The power supply isn't my problem.  Both the phone and the camera have hardwired kits.  It's the routing of the phone's power cable that I'm trying to tidy up.  I was hoping that I could feed the cable though the central air vent area which would make the cable pretty much invisible from the drivers and passengers point of view.

Lee: Many thanks for the link - that's really useful.  I still can't figure out how to remove (or even loosen slightly to get a cable through) the plastic dashboard surround.

According to the diagram for installing the Navigation, the dash just pops off. No clip and that screw must be holding something else. Must tug harder!

Good information Lee. Any more like that?
