I've got a 54 reg Rav4 and turned the Multi information display on today after not looking at it for several months. I've noticed that when driving the average speed shown in 20mph ( which is wrong) and the instantaneous fuel consumption varies from about 13 mpg to 99.9 mpg. Has anyone else had a similar problem and if so how do i fix it? Thanks.

As regards the instantaneous fuel consumption, that looks OK. We've had this type of readout on various cars now and they can show various rates of fuel consumption, up to 99.9mpg.

There may be nothing wrong.  The average speed covers from when the facility was last reset.  If that was not recently, it may be reflecting some previous crawling in heavy traffic.  Reset it and do a trip from A to B, noting the time and distance, and compare the result with what is displayed.  To reset, hold in the TRIP/NAVI button until the beep sounds.

The instantaneous mpg can show a very low value when climbing a steep hill, and will show 99.9 (its maximum) when descending a hill with the throttle closed.

Ah ok. So is it best to just ignore it and have the Average Fuel Consumption display showing all the time?

Yes, that's what I do.  The instantaneous is supposed to reflect the last 10 seconds.  It is only meaningful if you are doing a steady speed without altering the throttle.
