Dashcam in Prius Hybrid

No mention of Toyota or other Japanese cars in the Daily Mail article. How vulnerable is the Gen 4 Prius with regard to  the key hacking?  Has anybody ever heard of a Prius or any other Japanese car being key hacked and stolen? When I purchased our Gen 4 Prius I was informed it is not any easy car to steal!!! I suppose if a car thief really wants your car they have ways and means of stealing it.???

Toyotas rarely get 'exciting'  reviews by the motoring press, therefore not in so much demand from the less scrupulous marketplace....I'm happy with that situation.

Dave I'm also pleased with the situation. Mind you the Gen4 Prius as you know is a cracking car & certainly the best car I've ever owned & believe me I've had some nice cars in the past. The scum element probably aren't interested in the Prius because their 'clients' wouldn't want to have it off them. A good situation for us but I'm nevertheless not complacent!

I believe the smart key entry can be turned off by a dealer (or via OBD) - is that correct?  I would want that option.

I'm used to a gen2 and it having somewhere handy to put your keys whilst driving, I am going to miss that!

In my last Avensis it could be done via the Touch & Go head unit. This current car I deliberately opted for a spec. with a conventional key so can't say if that is the case for Touch 2 but I strongly suspect that it is.

You can turn it off yourself on the Gen 4, on the key fob, hold the lock button and press the unlock button twice.

I keep my keys (including the spare) in Faraday bags to prevent the signal being read, about £6 each on eBay.

Isn't that just key fob Battery saving mode?  So when you press a button on the fob to open the car it then cancels that mode!

You're right it just turns the key off, but you can disable smart entry and start via the nav, which turns it off on the car.

Press the "setup" button, select "car" then "vehicle customisation" and un-check the smart entry and start system box.

Kieth, now I'm really confused. I checked with the online manual & the instructions given for turning off the key does indeed put it into the Battery save mode. However, if you turn off the smart entry & start system via the nav, how do you start the car up? I know you can use the key to enter the locked car but if the start system has been disabled how do you then start the car because surely the hybrid system starter button ceases to function? Sorry if I seem naive about this.

I imagine that you place the fob against the button as if the fob had a flat Battery.

Correct  (page 641 IIRC)

And you can still unlock/lock the car using the buttons on the fob.

Hi Joe.

Look at this website.

http://www.silentwitness.co.uk

I have one of these, the resolution is unreal with sound too. Mine is a front view only a SW010 model, but I believe they do front and rear models too.

Mike.

what is his budget? I just got a Thinkware F800 Pro 2 channel installed. I wanted a really good parking mode as I have an issue with neighbours who keep scuffing my car whilst parking/leaving parking space & not owning up. Has a no. of features that I don't need but seems to be 1 of (if not) the best at not causing DAB interference.

The Auket DR02 D seems to be pretty good for the money but regularly goes out of stock on Amazon UK (I believe that the next shipment is due into UK in a few days).

I think hybrids in general are safe(r) from being stolen, purely on the basis that they're not "cool".

June 2016 (Source: The Guardian):

The top 10 stolen cars

(Theft rate per 1,000 vehicles on the road)

#1 Audi S3: 8.6
#2 Land Rover Defender: 5.8
#3 Land Rover Range Rover: 3.8
#4 Audi Q7: 3.7
#5 Ford Escort: 3.6
#6 BMW X5: 3.1
#7 Audi A5: 3.1
#8 Mitsubishi Shogun: 2.4
#9 BMW 5 Series: 2.4
#10 Toyota Hilux: 2.4 <<<<<<<<<< Toyota!

Well that's good news as far as I'm concerned. Mind you I don't see many Ford Escorts on the road these days so I wonder how old this information is & therefore how reliable it is?

I suppose some thefts are simple joyriders who want something easy to steal Vs serious/pro thieves who want something that can make them serious money.

There have been at least two Prius carjacking attempts that I know of but none recently.

I Have run the cables along side the rubber seals and probably the best way.  In terms of hard wiring it, it is possible.  I will be making two slit cuts in the carpet and a small pilot hole underneath the center console.  There is a piece of fabric or carpet inside the console where the hole will be made. This allows the hole to be concealed even if you decide to sell the car which I plan to do in a year.

As I will not be hard wiring it until I get the facelift version 2012 spec is when I will permanently hard wire everything.

i will show you pics once I have finished it over the weekend.

Telephoned my local Toyota dealer today with regard to supply and fit a dash cam.  They do not fit or supply dash cams.

They suggested two local auto electric  places; one being Halfords. I looked up reviews on the Halfords web site and I was utterly unimpressed.

I am reluctant to take our Prius to non Toyota dealers but I rang the other auto electric agent and he assured me they had fitted dash cams to Prius cars before. He will supply and fit dash cam for £150. I have booked the car in for next week to have the job done. Just hope it all goes OK. Pete B you are very fortunate to have a Toyota  dealer who does fit dash cams.

Very fortunate indeed.  Not just dashcams, they've fitted the cruise control switches to 2 Gen 1 Prius, 1 Gen 2 and a Gen 3, when many dealers told others they wouldn't or couldn't do it.

Bet then, I've spent a lot of money with them over the last 16 years, but it works both ways.  They're also good at giving me Hybrid loan cars as they know I don't do gears.
