Toyota avensis 2010 handbrake

Hi everyone. Just looking for some advice. I've had a avensis estate for the last 18 months. Its a 2010 model and it's done 51000 miles. The electronic handbrake has started having problems. ( Parking brake inoperable) I've recently taken it to toyota and had diagnostics done on it which itself cost £108 then for them to tell me the handbrake actuator assembly needs replacing at a total cost of £1699.37. Is this a normal thing to go wrong on a car that hasn't done a great deal of miles and is only just 8 years old. I'm finding it hard to justify paying that much to fix something that surely shouldn't go wrong this soon.

Not normal but not particularly rare. I know of one person who was had to replace it 3 times in first 8 years (2x under warranty) and many people have had no problems. Also heard of Toyota helping out cost wise even when out of warranty if there's a full Toyota history but again this is not the norm.  Many makes have the same problem due to shared parts. I will keep my Avensis until I run out of warranty (may take up the extended option when time comes) as the cost of replacement, as you've found, is quite scary on a relatively low value car.

A fault on an 8 yr old car could be expected but the cost is an eye opener. If your service history is all there try asking Toyota nicely (head office via email) you never know!

& tbh it seems to be less of a problem on the Avensis than on similar models from e.g. VAG. I have read HonestJohn saying that EPBs are more reliable than the old mechanical ones but obviously the cost to fix if you are one of the unlucky few is eye-watering.

EPBs are the way that all cars are going (for packaging & weight) so we are not likely to have a choice in the future albeit hopefully failure rates will decrease as designers/manufacturers gain experience.

& electronics failures are going to be the reason that many otherwise OK cars will be scrapped in the future because parts unavailability or cost to fix will outweigh the value of the car.
