At 60-65mph my Avensis starts to shake...

Hello,

When my Avensis (2002, Verso) gets to a speed in the range approx 60-65mph, the car starts to vibrate, more noticeably at the rear.

Accelerating out of this range, the vibration subsides. Anyone know what might be causing it?

Thanks

I'd say wheels need to be balanced.

That's why they put those tiny wheel weights on them, maybe some fell off.

Thanks for the reply. I will take a look at the wheels.

I hope you're right...I thought it might be the shock absorbers ££££.

Could also be warped/bulged tyre.

As above, check balance and tyre shape.  If that doesn't help I found that split bushes can cause this as well...... at about that speed.  Took ages to bottom out the issue for me as they weren't that bad visually.  I felt it through the steering wheel as well as the seat at about that speed and when breaking from high speed.

I checked all 4 wheels and none of them have 'balance weights' attached to the rims.
I guess they would only have been put on if the wheel was out of balance, right? Or maybe they've all fallen off?

They are put if wheel is out of balance, correct. But even steel rims have balance weights, and it's usually on the oposite side of the valve steam, to counter the bit of extra weight.

I havent saw a wheel that's so perfectly in balance that it had no weights on it, but then again, i dont go around looking at wheel weights.

You should get all 4 tires balanced, and the issue should be solved. It does not cost that much either.

balance weights will always be needed as you will never have a tyre or wheel that is perfectly balanced

generally vibration through the steering wheel can be due to front warped brake discs or front unbalanced wheels

vibration through the body is normally due to unbalanced rear wheels

  • 4 weeks later...

UPDATE:

Turned out one of the back tyres was bulging (as some of you suggested).

As the speed went up, the bulge became more pronounced and caused the car to vibrate.

Many thanks everyone.
