I’m not aware of anywhere else you can get the updates. I know they are free for the first 3 years of the cars life. Probably better to buy a TomTom satnav, which will be cheaper than the update and have free updates for life. I really don’t understand why Toyota can’t do this, their cost is a complete ripoff.

Compared to some other car manufacturers, the cost of Toyota map updates isn't too bad. In built sat navs have bespoke mapping, and this is where the cost comes in when one has to pay for updates. Nowhere else one can obtain updates legally.

With stand alone sat navs with lifetime mapping, the lifetime is the useful life of the unit as determined by the manufacturer - so there will come a time when the manufacturer will cease to provide support (ie.updates) for that unit.
