90A alternator for 1AZ?

Hi folks!

As some of you might know, I replaced my alternator a few months ago. Long story short, the lower bolt snapped off at some point, making the stator/pulley bent. Now my car is stranded 120 miles away from home, and I need to get the car running by Wednesday, or I will face extra charges from the towing company.

Problem is, I don't have 600 quid for a new alternator and none of the breakers have the 100A alternator for the 1AZ around (at least not one from an Avensis). Would the 90A alternator from the 1ZZ fit my car? If yes, is there any precautions I need to take, considering it has 10A less? Is there any other cars which use the same alternator as the 1AZ Avensis (RAV4, Camry etc.)?

I really appreciate your help!

I found an online retailer selling non-OEM alternators for the 2.0 and it was listed as compatible with the 2.4 Camry. Does this mean I can go buy a Camry alternator at the breaker? I know that the Camry has Denso alternators, while my car originally had Bosch. Sorry for posting again, it's just that time restraint and distance/train tickets kinda requires me to get ahold of the right part right away.

You need to see and compare the two alternators. The position of the mounting points need to be identical, so the belt is straight. The main plug has to be the same too. The belts are the same gong by the following -

Looking at the diagrams from the following, the alternator plugs may be different :-

You need to contact the sellers and tell them what you actually have and need, swap photos, so you know what you are buying before committing.

I am being general and because you are non-UK cannot recommend specific sellers.

I can see that some of the part numbers inside the two alternators are different but they are both called 27020. Or is that some other number? I found that the RAV4 has the same alternator mounting points (both are part number 27310) but both the Camry and RAV4 alternators have different part numbers for the pulley. Thank you so much for your help Konrad! You're always super helpful!

Update: I managed to find an alternator with the same part number at the local breaker, even though they told me they didn't have any alternators from a 2.0 petrol Avensis. Idk if that part came from an Avensis or not but it worked perfectly fine.

As for my original question about the 90A alternator from the 1.6 and 1.8, they have a different mounting so they most definitely won't work. Also, I think the alternator from the mk2 RAV4 is interchangeable (seemed to be the same mounting) but as I didn't end up buying it, I can't confirm this.

Well done Johan. You did the right thing by researching and checking, before you buy. The 2.0 1AZ is a different to the ZZ series. The main different is the direct injection used by the 1AZ, which means it needs a little more powerful alternator. Add the fact that the 1AZ is used on the higher spec cars with more kit. Also applies to the Battery. The bigger 2.4l 2AZ shares a lot of the 1AZ parts too.

1AZ-FSE is direct injection. 1AZ-FE, however, isn't. AFAIK the Avensis was sold with both engines, even though only the FSE was sold here in Norway. Kind of a bummer, since more and more petrol stations are beginning to sell E10, which I've heard the direct injection engines doesn't handle too well.

Also, the Camry has an 80A alternator, whereas the RAV4 and the Avensis has a 100A alternator. As you mention, there's probably a reason why the different cars were fitted with different alternator ratings.

Same for the UK, 1AZ-FSE direct injection only.
A lot of new petrol engines are direct injection, and most with turbos. Hopefully these newer engines can cope with E10 or the manufacturers will have a problem. Norway has on of the highest uptake of EV's and hybrids with incentives.
